We have reached the resolution to stop maintaining the 5.5.x version and we encourage users of this release to move to 5.6.x because they might be exposed to unpatched security vulnerabilities.

We have just released new versions of all XAMPP supported versions for Windows, Linux and OS X: 7.0.3-1, 5.6.15-2 and 5.5.30-7.

You can download new versions at http://www.apachefriends.org/download.html.

Impact:
An attacker could have access phpMyAdmin from remote servers bypassing the XAMPP security approach. This issue affects all platforms.

All users running an affected release should either upgrade or use one of the workarounds immediately.

Workaround:
If you already have a previous version installed and you can not install a new XAMPP, please do the following changes in your XAMPP files:

Windows: C:\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-xampp.conf

Linux: /opt/lampp/etc/extra/httpd-xampp.conf

OS X: /Applications/XAMPP/etc/extra/httpd-xampp.conf

     Alias /phpmyadmin "/xampp/phpMyAdmin/"
     <Directory "/xampp/phpMyAdmin">
         AllowOverride AuthConfig
- Require all granted
+ Require local
+ ErrorDocument 403 /error/XAMPP_FORBIDDEN.html.var
     </Directory>

Thanks to Kartik Adavane for reporting it.

The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure.

OpenSSL versions from 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f (inclusive) are vulnerable and make it possible to steal information, including everything from the encrypted content and to the secret key used for the encryption. The attack is also indetectable.
This security issue has been described in detail on the following page:

http://heartbleed.com/

If you are running any of the affected versions and are running a SSL-enabled website, meaning that you can access it using the https:// prefix instead of http://, you will need to patch the libraries in your system and replace the certificates and keys that may have been compromised. Please notice that remote access using ssh is NOT affected.

How to check if you are affected

Navigate to your XAMPP page and visit the phpinfo() link in the Php section of the left panel:

And look for "SSL Version":

If the version is between 1.0.1 and 1.0.1f (both included), you are running a vulnerable version. The previous image shows an affected one, from XAMPP 1.8.3-3 for Windows. If you are running XAMPP 1.8.2 on Windows you are NOT vulnerable.

How to fix it

We have released new XAMPP versions for all platforms fixing the bug but if you need to patch existing installations, you can follow the below instructions:

XAMPP for Windows

If you are running XAMPP 1.8.2 on Windows you are NOT vulnerable. To patch your current 1.8.3 installation you will need to replace some files in your installation following the below steps:

Download the Windows patch files xampp-opensslfix-win32.zip

Stop Apache using the XAMPP control panel

Uncompress the xampp-opensslfix-win32.zip file in your desktop. It contains a folder with the following list of files:

libeay32.dll
ssleay32.dll
openssl.exe

Navigate to your Apache bin directory, typically under:

c:\xampp\apache\bin

Create a directory to story a copy of the files that will be replaced named 'opensslbackup'

Move the below list of files (located in the c:\xampp\apache\bin directory) to the folder you just created (opensslbackup)

c:\xampp\apache\bin\libeay32.dll
c:\xampp\apache\bin\ssleay32.dll
c:\xampp\apache\bin\openssl.exe

Copy the files under the xampp-opensslfix-win32 folder you uncompressed in step 3 to c:\xampp\apache\bin

Navigate to your PHP directory, typically under:

c:\xampp\php

Create a directory to story a copy of the files that will be replaced named 'opensslbackup'

Move the below list of files (located in the c:\xampp\php directory) to the folder you just created (opensslbackup)

c:\xampp\php\libeay32.dll
c:\xampp\php\ssleay32.dll

Copy the files under the xampp-opensslfix-win32 folder you uncompressed in step 3 to c:\xampp\php

Start Apache using the XAMPP control panel

Verify that the "SSL Version" has been updated to a safe one (at least 1.0.1g) using the phpinfo() information as explained in the previous section

XAMPP for Linux

To patch your current installation you will need to replace some files in your installation. The first step would be to download the proper patch files for your architecture. If you are not sure, you can use the below command:

file /opt/lampp/bin/openssl

If the output looks like:

/opt/lampp/bin/openssl: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

Then you need the 64 bit version: xampp-opensslfix-linux-x64.tar.gz

And if it looks like:

/opt/lampp/bin/openssl: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

You will need the x86 version: xampp-opensslfix-linux.tar.gz

Once you have the proper patch, you can either use the patch.sh script contained in them or follow the steps manually:

Automated Method

This method will try to automatically patch your XAMPP installation. If it fails at some point and your installation seems to still be outdated, you will have to check the manual method:

Download the Linux patch files (grab the proper version depending on your platform as explained above).

Uncompress the downloaded file under /tmp

tar -xzf xampp-opensslfix-linux.tar.gz -C /tmp/

Execute the patch.sh script:

sudo /tmp/xampp-opensslfix-linux/patch.sh

In most of the cases, the output of the script will be:

Current OpenSSL version is: OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014

We have been working hard to improve Apache Friends / XAMPP. Beginning late last year, we expanded support for newer versions of PHP, increased the frequency of releases, and brought Linux and OS X ports up-to-date. Today, more than 10 years since Apache Friends was launched, we're happy to unveil a new website design. When we looked at the page analytics, it was perfectly clear: people come to the site to download XAMPP and not much else.

The biggest goal for this design, then, was to make it easier and quicker to download the XAMPP package and narrow down the number of navigational choices. Over the years, the old Apache Friends site had accumulated dozens of extras — from sample sites using XAMPP to a user-submitted wallpaper gallery — almost all of which had little traffic and become dated with many broken links.

Last November, we announced that we were accepting submissions from the Apache Friends community for a new site design. We selected a design from Ed Stephens in the UK that features a clean, modern interface and more intuitive navigation.
The updated Apache Friends site features updated content and streamlined navigation. It's also responsive now so it will display correctly in different devices and browsers. Lastly, we've also set up a new translation project so the community can translate the site for different languages.

There are additional updates in store, including expanded documentation, updated forum support, and more "getting started resources". We will get to them as time permits. If you have suggestions on things that you would like improved, or if you would like to contribute to the Apache Friends website, documentation, forums, etc., feel free to contact me directly at beltran (at) apachefriends (dot) org.

Hi everyone,

As you may remember, earlier in the year Bitnami started maintaining the XAMPP project. We have many ideas for improvement. We started with the software itself, expanding support for newer versions of PHP, more frequent releases and bringing up to date the Linux and OS X ports. We want now to improve the website, which has basically not changed since 2002! Our goal is to make the website design cleaner and easier to navigate, with responsive design to make it display correctly in different devices and browsers. Rather than come up with our own design, and given that our community is mainly web designers and developers, we thought that we should invite XAMPP users to propose their own designs We setup a 99designs contest online:

http://99designs.com/web-design/contests/re-design-apache-friends-xampp-website-reach-millions-267884

If you are a XAMPP user, please make sure to mention so when including your entry (i.e. you can include your forum username) so we will take those in special consideration. The contest is for two pages on the site, in order to find out a winning design. After that, we will contact the winner to talk about redesigning the whole site.

Other things that we want to continue to improve in the future are a bigger server, documentation, forum support and additional "getting started resources". We will get to them as time permits. If you have suggestions on things that you would like improved, feel free to contact me directly at beltran (at) apachefriends (dot) org

We have been working on Apache Friends and XAMPP for over 10 years now. We still have a lot of ideas on how to continue to improve it, but as the project grows it has become harder to find the time and resources needed to implement a lot of them. We have joined forces with BitNami to continue to improve XAMPP. BitNami provides a free library of web applications that can be installed anywhere. They are big open source supporters, have a lot of experience packaging Apache and we believe they will do a great job of improving BitNami moving forward. Please see below for some words from BitNami co-founder Daniel Lopez

[quote:1lv2c945]Dear XAMPP users,

At BitNami, we have been great admirers of XAMPP and what it has accomplished: making it easier for programmers everywhere to quickly setup and run their own local web development environments. We had a similar goal of making web apps easier to install anywhere, whether in your laptop or in the cloud. When Kay and Kai suggested a few months ago the possibility of joining forces with them to take over maintenance of XAMPP, it was an easy decision for us. Over the next weeks and months we will be working to continue to improve XAMPP. A big chunk of our expertise is in crossplatform installation and apps. Among other things we plan to:

Improve the existing installers

Improve the bundled Control Panel

Make it easy to install and develop with Drupal, Joomla!, WordPress, etc. on XAMPP

Improve 64bit support, PostgreSQL, additional languages (i.e. Python)

Improved Linux and OS X support

Improve the website look and feel

As a first step, we have made BitNami for XAMPP, a one-click installer that will allow you to install Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress on top of your existing XAMPP installation.

http://bitnami.org/xampp

As newcomers, we are looking to the XAMPP community to help us with the transition by providing us with feedback and ideas on how to continue to improve XAMPP. Please use the XAMPP forums or feel free to email me directly at daniel@bitnami.org with any suggestions or comments.

The most important updates are: Apache 2.4.3, MySQL 5.5.27, PHP 5.4.7, and phpMyAdmin 3.5.2.2.

Yes, last Friday Oracle released a new MySQL 5.5.28. This version is not part of XAMPP. The time was to short to include this also in this release.

It took nearly eight months to get this new version of XAMPP released. A long time, but somehow this year it was harder than usual. Alone in the last four weeks, there were two new versions of Apache, two new versions of PHP and even two new versions of MySQL.

But let's get to the point: What's new in this version?

This time we updated Apache to 2.2.21, MySQL to 5.5.16, PHP to 5.3.8, and phpMyAdmin to 3.4.5, as well as the usual minor updates of libraries or system-specific components.

Also new: There's now a Solaris version for x86 processors and both Solaris versions now support the PHP Oracle extension out-of-the-box, i.e. there is no installation of additional libraries needed to access an Oracle database.

All downloads and further details about the new versions are available at the respective XAMPP project page.

Thierry Zoller informed us about four possible privilege escalations in XAMPP for Windows. Thierry, thank you very much for notifying us of this problem.

The problem occurs if the installation path of XAMPP for Windows contains a blank character (like in [b:jmamqbgm]C:\Program files\XAMPP[/b:jmamqbgm]) and you're creating a file named [b:jmamqbgm]C:\Program.exe[/b:jmamqbgm]. In this case you will be able (for example) to catch the starting FileZilla service and start your own program ([b:jmamqbgm]C:\Program.exe[/b:jmamqbgm]) as a service.

To exploit this vulnerability an attacker already needs full access to your C:\ directory to create the needed C:\Program.exe file.

Thierry found three other scenarios within this bug will appear. To find out more details about this problem please take a look into Thierry's Blog.

This time, it really took us ages to get our newest XAMPP version out. Although we started up with BETA testing in November, new releases of MySQL, PHP, Apache, and phpMyAdmin kept drawing the phase out. But we did it and can now present you with a brand new XAMPP release.

New in this version of XAMPP: Apache (2.2.0), MySQL (5.0.18), PHP (5.1.1) and phpMyAdmin (2.7.0-pl1).

Last time, we didn't offer an update package, and there won't be any this time, either. It isn't really possible to automate an upgrade from Apache 2.0 to Apache 2.2, and we'd like to avoid anyone messing up their server. So if you'd like to update to the new Apache version, you'll need to install a new version of XAMPP and migrate your data manually.

Tuesdays was a big day in the history of PHP: The final release of PHP 5.0.0 was made public by the PHP development team. At the same time the development team also published a new version of the now "old" branch of PHP: 4.3.8. This version fixes several security issues of 4.3.7. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to PHP 4.3.8 as soon as possible.

So again we needed to build a new XAMPP release. But because such very new versions like PHP 5 always should be handled with care we decided to include both new versions into XAMPP: PHP 5.0.0 and PHP 4.3.8. If you find out your PHP application doesn't work with PHP 5 you will be able to switch back easily to PHP 4.
