Hurricane Matthew

spiral-path:

PSA for those on the Coast: BE SAFE, and BE SMART!

This one is going to be a gnarly one.  It’s not expected to make landfall, but ride the coast all the way up. This means it probably won’t reduce in strength like most storms do.  Mother Nature is a terrifying force and sometimes we cannot stand against her.

If you are in Evacuation Zones please heed warnings and the advice of Emergency Responders. If demanded to evacuate, please comply.  Things can be replaced, you can’t.

The National Guard has been mobilized, but not evacuating when you should puts their lives at risk as well as yours.

To those outside the danger zones, but still in the path- Hunker down.  Make sure you have:

  • Dry Food
  • Candles
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • window/door seals
  • pull in all outside decor/furniture not cemented down (they’ll become projectiles).
  • Your Bathtub filled with water in case they shut off the city water
  • FIrst Aid supplies, benedryl, epipen, bandages, antiseptic, etc
  • Duct Tape (You never know what this stuff is good for)
  • emergency radio
  • An emergency plan should you get separated from family (keep in mind cell towers may be out)

For more information on how to get through this thing, take a look at FEMA’s website—it’s packed with resources, including tools through which you can help first responders get to those in need. Stay safe down there, Tumblr, and be sure to check in with your loved ones.

If you’re looking for ways to help Haiti out, check out our earlier post, and also add Sow a Seed to that list. They focus on orphans in the Caribbean, and they’re currently directing their efforts to hurricane relief.

We took a camera and these goofs jumped in front of it. So here you go—the best cosplay in New York City: Rick, Morty, Bus, Bill Cipher, Silver Banshee, and cardboard Gundam.

Then this guy came to life and tried to kill everyone!

…but this guy stopped him.

It was all very thrilling. See you again tomorrow!

The statistics won’t come as a shock to those aware of the “school-to-prison pipeline,” a series of policies and practices that push students, especially those most at-risk, from classrooms to the criminal justice system at a young age.

It’s time we change the conversation and the policy that leads to more incarceration, inequality and hopelessness for so many.

Anonymous asked:

How do voter ID laws impact people of color?

historicallyblack answered:

Abby Phillip: Several studies suggest that people of color are less likely to have the forms of identification required by some voter ID laws. And in some cases, voter ID laws themselves might not have disproportionately affected minority groups, but subsequent changes to access to IDs do. For example, in Alabama. The state’s voter ID law went into effect in 2014, and the following year, a government agency announced that it would close 31 Department of Motor Vehicle offices, where most people would get a state-issued license. The closures effected 8 of 10 of the counties with the highest percentage of black voters.

The public outcry after the closures were announced forced the state to backtrack, making changes so that people in those counties would still have access to a state-issued license. Still, these are the kinds of consequences — intended or unintended — that critics point to when they raise concerns about how voter ID laws might affect the ability of people of color to exercise their constitutional rights.

This week: The school-to-prison pipeline with Mic.

The “school-to-prison pipeline” refers to policies and practices that push students—especially those most at-risk—from classrooms to the criminal justice system at a very young age.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, schools are six times more likely to suspend black girls than white girls, and three times more likely to suspend black boys than white boys. And there are more security officers than counselors in three of the five largest school districts in the U.S.

It’s time we address the problems that lead to mass incarceration, inequality, and hopelessness for so many.

Submit your questions by Wednesday 10/5 to Mic’s The Movement (@the-movemnt)

Poll tax exemption, 1898. Photo courtesy of Johnson family.

Voting and civic participation has always been important to my family, as shown through my great-great-grandfather’s poll tax exemption. Years later, in 1899 the NC state legislature passed laws requiring literacy tests (but included grandfather clauses that allowed poor whites who couldn’t read to continue to vote.)  I look at this image often to remind me of where I come from, and to never take my rights for granted.

Story from Michelle Lee

Washington Post’s Historically Black Ask Box is open for Tumblr’s next round of Issue Time on Voting Rights. Washington Post reporters, columnists and other experts (including Michelle who submitted above!) will be answering your questions on the history of voting rights in the U.S., voter suppression and the current political landscape.

We’ll be accepting questions until Wednesday, Sept. 28 and publishing the responses here on Saturday, Oct. 1.
