Introducing NetMaps: Network Maps for Infrastructure Discovery

Ever wondered how different components of distributed apps are actually connected over the network? When it comes to troubleshooting of distributed application stacks like Apache Kafka, Spark, Hadoop, Cassandra,  Solr, or Elasticsearch — not to mention Microservice architectures or Docker Containers — information about the deployed infrastructure becomes critical.  This post and video will show you how to leverage NetMaps to your advantage: http://blog.sematext.com/2016/01/06/introducing-netmaps/

How to forward CloudTrail (or other logs from AWS S3) to Logsene

This recipe shows how to send CloudTrail logs (which are .gz logs that AWS puts in a certain S3 bucket) to a Logsene application, but should apply to any kinds of logs that you put into S3. We’ll use AWS Lambda for this, but you don’t have to write the code. We’ve got that covered.

Using Grafana with Elasticsearch for Log Analytics

As of version 2.6, you can now use Grafana to render both logs and metrics from logs stored in Logsene.

The Logsene API is compatible with #Elasticsearch, which means you can use the Grafana (from v2.6 and up) with your data in Logsene simply by using Grafana’s Elasticsearch Data Source and pointing it to Logsene. You only need to do two things:

1) Create a Data Source
2) Add a Table Panel to a Dashboard

Watch this short video to see Grafana and Logsene together in action:

The Top Node.js Metrics to Watch

A deep dive into #Node .js monitoring from Stefan Thies (@seti321). Includes key metrics like Garbage Collection & Process Memory, Worker Count, Event Loop Latency, and more.
Monitoring Node.js Applications has special challenges. The dynamic nature of the language provides many "opportunities" for developers to produce memory leaks, and a single function blocking the e...

How to Add Performance Monitoring to Node.js Applications

A how-to post about how we monitor #Node.js to help others with the same DevOps challenges when introducing new Node.js apps, or even the additional challenge of operating large deployments with a mix of technologies in the application stack: http://blog.sematext.com/2015/07/31/adding-monitoring-to-node-js-and-io-js-apps/

Using Filebeat to Send Elasticsearch Logs to Logsene

How-to blog post that shows how to use Filebeat to send log files to Logsene (centralized logging tool).  In this example we ship Elasticsearch logs, but Filebeat can tail and ship logs from any log file, of course.
One of the nice things about our log management and analytics solution Logsene is that you can talk to it using various log shippers. You can use Logstash, or you can use syslog protocol capable t...

Docker Swarm: Collecting Metrics, Events & Logs

Docker Swarm is a cluster manager for #Docker.  When accessed via the Docker API by Docker API Clients or Docker command line tools, a Docker Swarm cluster looks just like a single Docker Host.  Docker Swarm distributes containers to multiple nodes using various deployment strategies in the cluster scheduler.  Read on for insights into collecting Docker metrics, events and logs: http://blog.sematext.com/2016/01/12/docker-swarm-collecting-metrics-events-logs/

MongoDB Monitoring Support - Video & Blog post

MongoDB exposes a boatload of metrics, but instead of just throwing all of them on endless charts, we’ve taken the time to cherry pick what we think are the top 50 most valuable #MongoDB metrics to monitor. We have furthermore made it possible to filter the MongoDB metrics by server, as well as a database and table where possible.

Sematext Joins Docker’s ETP Program for Logging

Sematext has just been recognized by #Docker as an Ecosystem Technology Partner (ETP) for logging. This designation indicates that our centralized logging tool, Logsene, has contributed to the logging driver and is available to users and organizations that seek solutions to capture logging data for monitoring their Dockerized distributed applications.  Details in video below and this blog post: http://blog.sematext.com/2015/12/15/docker-logging-partner-sematext-logsene/
