Very heavy rainfalls occurred over Otago and Southland, with twenty four hour rainfall totals of 110mm being recorded in many places. These disastrous floods killed stock, damaged houses,bridges and railways, caused washouts and crops were badly affected.A civil emergency was declared, and locals called these the "Black Friday Floods."
