As privacy evolves, so does the job of being a lawyer in privacy. Where first there was interpreting and applying law, now there is a great deal of precedent. Many who once focused on compliance now talk about risk instead. Automation tools are already coming into the market, making certain tasks more efficient to accomplish. This panel of privacy veterans draws on a wealth of experience to predict the privacy profession’s future for lawyers.

The vast majority of regulatory activity results in either no enforcement action whatsoever or a settlement agreement. Just what happens between first contact and final paperwork? With a long track record of working with regulators around the world, our panelists will help lawyers understand what works, what doesn’t and how to ensure the process isn’t too painful.
Refreshment Break
Danielle Citron, Research Professor, Professor of Law, University of Maryland Carey School of Law
George Jepsen, Attorney General, Office of the Attorney General, Connecticut
University of Maryland legal professor Danielle Citron’s “The Privacy Policymaking of States Attorneys General,” soon to be published in the Notre Dame Law Review, is one of the most influential pieces of privacy writing of 2016, picking up awards from the IAPP and the Future of Privacy Forum for its important dissection of how the states influence U.S. privacy policy as a whole. It was a group of 10 attorneys general, after all, who first went to Silicon Valley in 1998 to talk to companies about not having privacy policies, leading to eventual enforcement actions against DoubleClick and others. In this keynote session, Citron talks with Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen about how he approaches privacy enforcement, how AG work together across jurisdictions and how the states may approach privacy regulation under a Trump administration.
