Creating Slopegraphs in Power BI

Did you know that it's easy to transform Power BI's Line Chart into a Slopegraph? No DAX or fancy workarounds are required. Slopegraphs are a great way to judge the rate and magnitude of change by looking at the steepness of a line’s slope. With a slopegraph, it is also easier to discern how different elements or categories trend compared to others.

Extracting Report Level measures DAX using SQL Profiler output

In the May 2017 release of Power BI Desktop a new ‘report measures’ feature was released. It allows users who have connected Power BI Desktop to an external Analysis Services tabular model to write their own measures using DAX. These measures are stored within the report, and sent in the queries back to the underlying model. Any user who has access to query the model can do this – just the same as if they were using Excel or SQL Management Studio to connect to the SSAS server.

SSRS like traffic light indicators in Power BI

As I remember managers used to love SSRS reports for their availability of traffic light indicators which are useful way of measuring KPIs, trends etc. During my recent Power BI engagements with clients I have been asked few times if similar can be achieved in Power BI and my answer to that was, yes by pinning SSRS reports into Power BI which is essentially using SSRS and only with version 2016 but during the process I also discovered alternative approach which I want to highlight below.

The new PlayAxis custom visual for Power BI will animate your report and its visuals without any user interaction.
It is perfect to show your reports without having to click every time you want to change the values of a filter and it is also great for when you want to see trends or look for patterns in your data. Just click "play" and focus on how data is evolving.
