GitHub has more than 10 million users and 30 million monthly visitors who generate an abundance of data. As a growing company, we use that data to drive our corporate strategy, verify that what we're shipping is having the impact we want, and provide a more efficient and expansive experience to change the way people write software and collaborate on projects.

As a Data Scientist on the Analytics team, you will collaborate with our product managers, software engineers, and business units to collect and analyze data, define success, build dashboards, design models, and communicate findings. You will actively discover new opportunities to apply data and insights to company workflows.

We are looking for the kind of person who thrives when building bridges between different functions at the company and enjoys learning new skills for the task at hand.

Responsibilities

  • Surface product and business insights through data inquiry and analysis
  • Embed into product and engineering teams to identify and creatively solve relevant questions
  • Help the business and product teams form and iterate our key performance indicators to make sure we are focusing on the most important factors
  • Communicate and present findings to partners in multi-functional roles
  • Design and build automated, repeatable processes for working with data such as dashboards
  • Develop forecasts and predictive models to better understand our most important metrics
  • Foster a supportive, dynamic environment that will allow everyone to do their best work

Minimum requirements:

  • 5+ years experience in a quantitative role
  • Fluency in SQL and deep understanding of database technology and querying very large datasets (e.g., MySQL, Postgres, Redshift, Hive, Spark SQL, etc.)
  • Understanding of statistical analysis, especially hypothesis testing and causal inference
  • Experience with at least one statistical software package such as R, NumPy/SciPy/matplotlib, Stata, SPSS, MATLAB, or advanced Excel
  • Strong interest in technology with good product intuition and an eye for business needs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in storytelling with data

Nice to haves:

  • Experience working with technical products/markets
  • Knowledge of BI tools such as Looker, Tableau, or similar
  • Strong data visualization skills in both familiarity with how people interpret data visualizations and how to build interactive visualizations such as with D3
  • Understanding of computer science fundamentals (e.g., data structures and algorithms)
  • Familiarity with predictive techniques/machine learning algorithms and the desire to stay up to date as the field of data science evolves

GitHub is committed to building a diverse workforce and strongly encourages applications from people of color and other groups currently underrepresented in tech. We are looking for candidates who:

• Display a strong commitment to building an inclusive tech environment

• Have demonstrated resilience and resourcefulness both in and outside of the workplace

• Can bring a new perspective based on unique educational, professional, and lived experiences

• Can effectively communicate with people from disparate backgrounds

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

Because we do business with the government, we must reach out to, hire, and provide equal opportunity to qualified people with disabilities1. To help us measure how well we are doing, we are asking you to tell us if you have a disability or if you ever had a disability. If you are applying for a job, any answer you give will be kept private and will not be used against you in any way.

Because a person may become disabled at any time, we are required to ask all of our employees to update their information every five years. You may voluntarily self-identify as having a disability on this form without fear of any punishment because you did not identify as having a disability earlier.

How do I know if I have a disability?
