Last week, the classrooms and studio spaces of the Last week, the classrooms and studio spaces of the McMurtry Building and Stanford Art Galley were bursting at the seams with an incredible display of student work. An array of drawings, sculptures, video, paintings, installations and more were made available to the public as part of a tradition that celebrates our impressive and diverse community of artists.

We continue to draw inspiration from the abundance of creativity within the arts community here at Stanford, and look forward to the works to come as we wind down for the holiday break. Thanks to our participating students for an awesome show.

Anicka Yi’s year-long residency through Stanford Anicka Yi’s year-long residency through Stanford Arts incubated the first chapter of Metaspore: a nomadic research initiative fostering interdisciplinary “spores” of collective action. Embracing Yi’s art as a guiding philosophy, Metaspore sculpts regenerative spaces, multi-sensorial experiences, visionary conversations, and art-science partnerships.

Throughout the artist’s spring course co-taught with @xmiguelnovelo, Metaspore: The Networked Sensorium, Yi investigated these research areas alongside students from diverse disciplines. Together, they developed strategies for addressing significant planetary changes through immersive media and extended reality experiments.

The residency concluded with two public events in the Bay Area. Organized by @anickayi_studio in partnership with Four One Nine and with support from Stanford Arts, the Metaspore Symposium was a full day of visionary conversations, embodied performances, and community activities fostering urgent dialogue between arts and sciences. Alongside the program, students from the course Kelsey Chen, Nicolai Dorka, and Bhumikorn Kongtaveelert with co-collaborator Lauren Marshall unveiled observations from both the human and more-than-human sensorium through an installation of scent, sight, sound, and sculpture at @etalgallerysf.

“The residency was complex and deviated in the most exhilarating of ways from what one would normally think of as a residency. It was underscored by the insights of the people, from my co-instructor Miguel Novello to Ellen Oh and the student fellows. The sheer bounty of brilliant minds, and the convergence of disciplines and departments. It’s a cradle for innovation and possibility.” - Anicka Yi

We’re inspired by the transformative ideas and discoveries that were powered through this first phase of Metaspore and are thrilled to see the many forms it inhabits next! 🦠✨

The Stanford Internship Program in the Arts (SIPA) is now open! If you're passionate about the arts and itching to gain hands-on experience, this is your chance to get immersed in Stanford's vibrant arts ecosystem.

SIPA offers opportunities to work in the arts through two different tracks:

Pre-Arranged: Participate in a 10-week placement (part-time or full-time) with one of Stanford’s arts institutions: @stanfordlive/ @frostampitheater, @cantorarts, @anderson.collection.stanford or with a faculty artist. All SIPA participants receive funding to support living costs during the 10-week internship.
