Description
Instantly reach the people in your life—for free. Messenger is just like texting, but you don't have to pay for every message (it works with your data plan).
Not just for Facebook friends: Message people in your phone book and just enter a phone number to add a new contact.
Group chats: Create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place.
Photos and videos: Shoot videos and snap selfies or other photos right from the app and send them with one tap.
Free calls: Talk as long as you want, even with people in other countries. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply.)
Even more ways to message:
Bring your conversations to life with stickers.
Preview your camera roll photos and videos without leaving the conversation--then choose the perfect ones to send.
Record voice messages when you have more to say.
Extra features:
Know when people have seen your messages.
Forward messages or photos to people who weren't in the conversation.
Search for people and groups to quickly get back to them.
Turn on location to let people know when you're nearby.
See who's available on Messenger and who's active on Facebook.
Turn off notifications when you're working, sleeping or just need a break.
Stay logged in so you never miss a message.

Notifications
I use this app a lot. Almost more than my regular messaging. But there is something that has bugged me for awhile and now, with this last update, really annoyed me. I have an iPhone 6S running iOS 10 and when my messenger updated it changed the notification to the default notification tone. Now I have always hated the fact that you cannot change the notification tone on the iPhone but I was ok with it because it had its own unique sound anyway. But now I have to change my notification sound to be able to tell the difference from a text or a message.
Make it so that iPhone users can change their notification sounds!
Good, but incomplete.
{Australian perspective}
Pros:
~Messaging status is very informative. Read or delivered, etc.
~ Attractive emoji set which is optional to use. They look hand drawn & retro.
~ Facebook is the most popular social network, so contracts are easy to find or match.
~ Access to chat bots.
~ Stickers, GIF's
Cons:
~ Notifications are unreliable. Sometimes you don't hear the sound or see anything on the lock screen.
~ Updates are too large. 120MB every fortnight. Multiply that by all the devices you have. Details off what gets updated is missing as well.
~ Messenger emoji set is smaller than Apple's set.
~ It's not easy to switch between emoji sets in the same thread. Something I like to do. What you see is not what the recipient gets.
~ Most chat bots are not useful. In the early stage, they're toys.
~ Waiting for Facebook M bot assistant to be released. Google Allo already has 'Google Assistant'.
Glitchy glitchy glitchy...
I'm on my 3rd re-install of the app, since it keeps glitching. It crashes when accessing photos, sending photos, opening the app when the "photos" tab is active, and it crashes randomly for no reason. If I can open it fast enough to switch modes, I can keep it from crashing again. But usually it won't load, and I have to delete my safari cashe and re-install the app.
