On September 6, 2016, the IDPF Board of Directors unanimously approved elevation of EPUB 3.1 to Public Draft status. EPUB 3.1, developed by the EPUB Working Group, represents a new major version of EPUB. Although generally compatible with EPUB 3.0.1, significant changes have been introduced in this new version (e.g., changes in metadata expressions and removal of support for some EPUB-defined features).

As previously announced, all IDPF members are invited to attend a Publishing Community Meeting on September 22 during W3C TPAC 2016 (Lisbon), co-sponsored by W3C and IDPF, as well as to attend other meetings throughout TPAC week, the flagship annual event for the global community developing Open Standards for the Web.

The EPUB 3 Working Group is pleased to announce that the third Editor's Draft of EPUB 3.1 is now available for community review. This draft is feature complete, and all open issues in the tracker have been addressed. The Working Group is looking to publish the first formal Public Draft of the EPUB 3.1 specification by early September, and meanwhile encourages any community feedback on the work to date.

IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS Global/IMS), the world leader in EdTech interoperability and innovation have announced that Markus Gylling will join IMS Global to lead IMS efforts in accessibility and digital content and to serve as the primary executive for IMS Europe effective October 1, 2016. The appointment will help accelerate the effective adoption and use of e-textbooks and other digital learning materials for all learners worldwide and will strengthen support and integration resources for IMS members across Europe.

In its annual Board elections, 81 IDPF member organizations cast votes, selecting eight Board members from among twelve candidates. Newly elected to the IDPF Board are Mike Baker (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) and Tzviya Siegman (Wiley). All six incumbents who ran for re-election were selected, including Paul Belfanti (Jone & Bartlett Learning), Leslie Hulse (HarperCollins), Rick Johnson (Ingram Content Group), Bill Kasdorf (Apex CoVangtage), Liisa McCloy-Kelley (Penguin Random House), and Junichi Yoshii (Kodansha).

The EPUB 3 Working Group is pleased to announce that the second Editor's Draft of EPUB 3.1 is now available for community review. The previous Editors Draft, published in January, included some potentially controversial changes, in effect as 'trial balloons". Based on community feedback, some of these proposed changes have now been modified or redacted.
