The land of Syria is a hellscape. A desert ruin, a blasted place where fundamentalists clash with fascists as major powers—America, Russia, Turkey, Israel—drop bombs.

After a U.S.-brokered cease-fire collapsed in recriminations, Washington responded by saying it wouldn’t talk to Moscow about Syria. Then Moscow announced its intention to pull out of a nuclear agreement with Washington, and moved an advanced anti-aircraft system into Syria. President Obama sought a “Plan B” (good luck with that). Meanwhile, at the vice presidential debate, both Tim Kaine and Mike Pence called for humanitarian “safe zones” protected by U.S. forces.

The Birth of a Nation isn’t as compelling a glimpse into the horrors of slavery as 12 Years a Slave. Nor is it as epic as previous films about uprisings, such as Braveheart or Spartacus. Though it features several commanding performances and has a number of heartrending moments, Nate Parker’s retelling of Nat Turner’s rebellion feels loosely strung together and, ultimately, lacking in dramatic tension.

The first thing to remember is the name of the restaurant. It’s called BLT Prime by David Burke and not BLT Prime by Donald Trump. At the restaurant’s homepage, the address is listed simply as 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, with no mention that this is the location of the Trump International Hotel—formerly the Old Post Office Pavilion. I imagine this is all intentional.
