Adrian Colley: I keep mine in the fridge, to double the shelf life. I'm about to make a phone mount and a coin holder for my car. I might find components for them, in which case I'll use sugru to hold them in place, or I might make them entirely out of the stuff.

Thom Thomas: +Adrian Colley that's freaking pro. Never thought about the fridge trick. If you have pictures, I'd love to see your magic.

Adrian Colley: The fridge thing is in the small print on the sugru packages. Here's the only picture I have to hand. I had a wallet with a metal plate that tore a hole through three pockets, through abrasion. I coated it with sugru and carved my initials into it. Problem solved, and I don't really know how else I could have fixed it.

Fahrezal Effendi: I've implemented XMPP with Node from scratch, you know, by reading the specs.

And these are some of my thoughts.

First, maybe because I'm not that into JS, but I feel that managing JS code for that size is not that easy (for example, creating modules, it's easy and straightforward in Python, also the readability). Some small things (like str.startswith, str.endswith, x in list) I missed from Python.
And also, some libraries (implement some part of the standard), either not exist yet or not stable yet. For example, XMPP requires the software to normalize the JID using stringprep (so you can tell that [email protected] is same with [email protected]).

For me, if I need to deal with XMPP again, I'll look for solid implementation for Node. But if I want to write my own, I'll go with Python (Tornado).

Dedi Purwanto: I see.. it seems like node still doesn't have something that Python can't do, and yet Python offers more readable structure and easier code management. I think I'll go for python.

Fahrezal Effendi: But I'll say some intro to XMPP.

XMPP, like the name says, is extensible. One method to make it extensible is trough modularity.

The main element of XMPP, the core, is called the core. It deals with authentication and federation (i.e., connecting to other servers for cross domain messaging). The core doesn't handle the messaging (i.e., exchanging texts). It does pass messages to components or other severs in federation.

The messaging part is actually a component, an official component (called IM in the spec, the spec of XMPP split into two: core and im).

And other component could be introduced for specific needs. For example group chat (MUC) is a component. File transfer is component. Video conference is another component. And so on.

And each component could be separate server that binded to each own hostname (the binding is not on OS level, they are assigned through the core, mapping servers to domains). For example, the core component is at example.com. The IM component is at chat.example.com and muc component at groups.example.com.

And, each component could be written in any language of your preference. For example, you use Prosodi (Lua) for the core. You could write the MUC in Python or Node. They are communicating through standard XMPP component protocol.
