Istio

IBM is one of the original founders of Istio, an open-source services mesh framework designed to run on top of Kubernetes. In fact, the Kubernetes product team has a Master Inventor seated on the Istio open-source board. Istio extends Kubernetes using its native APIs and proxies running alongside your application containers to provide additional features like traffic management, detailed telemetry, encryption, and policy control.

Why Istio? In many organizations, the volume of services is growing quickly, creating a management challenge. Istio provides a way for developers to seamlessly connect, manage and secure networks of different microservices — regardless of platform, source or vendor. This allows those developers to support traffic-flow management, access policy enforcement and telemetry data aggregation between microservices, without making changes to application code. Before Istio, this kind of service management would have required a significant amount of coding.
