Checking for contaminants costs you nothing and could save your analysis. decontam is a fantastic contribution to our modern microbiome toolbox. Great work , and coauthors!

I’ve often heard students describe their confidence interval as if it were the fixed target, and the “true” value was the arrow that may or may not land on the target 95% of the time.... 2/4

I am constantly amazed by how many things we think are true in microbiome science are directly contradicted by the data that comes across my desk

Appealing idea: strain concentration = total concentration x relative abundance. Even more appealing idea: having (validated) error bars on an estimate of strain concentration.

Alternatively we can see broad shifts towards higher abundance of organisms that tend to have higher CNs, but not whether any given organism's CNV changes, yes? (Because its abundance could have changed to give higher # of 16S copies)

A reminder to all biostatisticians: we are the bad fairies of medical research: nobody really likes us, they don’t want us at the party, when we stomp in we are disagreeable and we finish by sending everyone to sleep.

Tip to remember the main regex anchors `^` for start of string and `$` for the end: First, you get the ^ POWER 🔌, then you get the $ MONEY 💰. h/t via

One of many things I'll be using from 's talk: Small p-value? At least one of three things is happening. 1. You null hypothesis isn't true. 2. Something very unlikely happened. 3. Something in your bag of assumptions and models isn't right. 🤩

We recently revised a paper that we submitted to PSB. Based on reviewer feedback, we now discuss a "Continental Breakfast Included" effect that can arise with investigators evaluate the performance of their own methods.

Hey Grad Twitter, and I are thinking about doing a podcast on the financial troubles graduate students face. Anything from waiting for travel reimbursements, to insurance, to living expenses. Please share your story with me, and RT for exposure.
