President Donald #Trump has made no secret of the fact that he thinks lawmakers are wasting their time trying to come up with a funding solution for #bordersecurity. But the 17 members of Congress tasked with reaching that compromise are just trying to forge ahead. Staffers worked over the weekend to hammer out a deal.

But while members of the committee are still expressing optimism they can work something out, there is a sense, even within the Republican Party, that the President’s comments pose a stumbling block, and that he is trying to control an appropriations process he doesn’t understand.

President Donald #Trump faces a very tough road to a second term in 2020. His job approval numbers are mired in the low 40s, Democrats loathe him, a significant chunk of Republicans want someone else as their nominee and, on top of all of that, special counsel #RobertMueller is still working on his report about Russian interference in the 2016 election.

But it's not all dark clouds for Trump. Because in at least one respect, he will have something that he never had in 2016 - and something that none of his potential 2020 Democratic opponents will have either: massive amounts of money (and the time to use it as he sees fit.) In his first 2 years in office, Trump raised $130m for his 2020 race - and has spent all but $19mn of it. Those numbers are absolutely without any modern comparison - as both George W. Bush and Barack Obama largely eschewed raising money for their re-election in their first two years in the White House.

The German banking powerhouse is under renewed scrutiny for its ties to #Trump during the years he was a New York City real estate magnate, a relationship Democrats intend to probe now that they’ve recaptured the majority in the House of Representatives. A 2018 financial disclosure form showed liabilities for Trump of at least $130m to #DeutscheBank Trust Company Americas, a unit of the German bank. They are for properties including D.C.’s Trump International Hotel, located in a former post office in the nation’s capital.

The House Intelligence Committee’s Democratic leadership has scheduled a vote to send potentially explosive transcripts to special counsel #RobertMueller’s desk. The committee will vote this Wednesday on turning over sensitive #Russia -probe transcripts to #Mueller, in a move that carries serious implications for anyone who can be shown to have lied. The handover could put President #Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr., in the hot seat. Democrats have signaled suspicions that Don Jr. may have been untruthful.

Mueller has already slapped criminal charges on two people for making false statements to the committee in the course of its Russia investigation: President Trump’s longtime attorney and fixer, #MichaelCohen, and former Trump campaign adviser #RogerStone. House intel committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has said for weeks that turning over transcripts to the special counsel’s office would be one of his first moves after Democrats took control of the committee following November’s midterm election.

According to the latest CBS News poll, 66% of Americans don't think #Trump should declare an emergency to build the wall. 73% of Americans want Mr. Trump to continue negotiating while keeping the government open, rather than demand wall funding if that forces a shutdown. A similar number (75%) say congressional #Democrats should also continue negotiating, rather than deny funding in a move that might force a shutdown.

First Trump's attack on the press has been a bust. He hasn't been able to generate sympathy for himself or undermine accurate reporting on foreign policy or on domestic matters, nor has he been able to maintain illusions about himself. Second, Trump’s presidency is hanging by a thread - the economy. With unemployment so low and attitudes toward the economy so high, it is historically anomalous to see such negative attitudes toward the president and such pessimism about the direction of the economy. Finally, Democrats in 2020 will have a receptive audience if they make the case that Trump has made us less free, less united, less respected in the world, less safe and less decent as a people.

When President #Trump delivers his #StateoftheUnion address on Tuesday (Feb 5), he can quite justifiably say that the state of the #economy is good. Unemployment is low, inflation is muted and growth has continued unabated for nearly 10 years. Mr. Trump controls #economicpolicy, not the economy, and so a fairer report card would also assess his actual policies. What is startling is that the economists are nearly unanimous in concluding that Mr. Trump’s policies are destructive. That is why many economists are uneasy about his presidency, even though the economy earns solid grades.

Mr. Trump’s #protectionist impulses place him squarely at odds with the economic wisdom that tariffs are harmful. Mr. Trump’s #fiscalpolicy is a colossal failure. His signature achievement is a $1.5tn tax cut that provided stimulus when, arguably, it was least needed. Mr. Trump’s luck was to inherit an economy that had been on a steadily improving glide path since around 2010. Charting nearly any economic statistic shows that today’s economic strength represents a continuation of that trend.
