+The New Democrat The debate in the #DemocraticParty over #freedom, has to do with Democrats who believe in #FreedomOfChoice and Democrats who believe in #FreedomFromWant. Democrats who believe in #WelfareRights, instead of #IndividualRights.

According to the latest CBS News poll, 66% of Americans don't think #Trump should declare an emergency to build the wall. 73% of Americans want Mr. Trump to continue negotiating while keeping the government open, rather than demand wall funding if that forces a shutdown. A similar number (75%) say congressional #Democrats should also continue negotiating, rather than deny funding in a move that might force a shutdown.
First Trump's attack on the press has been a bust. He hasn't been able to generate sympathy for himself or undermine accurate reporting on foreign policy or on domestic matters, nor has he been able to maintain illusions about himself. Second, Trump’s presidency is hanging by a thread - the economy. With unemployment so low and attitudes toward the economy so high, it is historically anomalous to see such negative attitudes toward the president and such pessimism about the direction of the economy. Finally, Democrats in 2020 will have a receptive audience if they make the case that Trump has made us less free, less united, less respected in the world, less safe and less decent as a people.

When President #Trump delivers his #StateoftheUnion address on Tuesday (Feb 5), he can quite justifiably say that the state of the #economy is good. Unemployment is low, inflation is muted and growth has continued unabated for nearly 10 years. Mr. Trump controls #economicpolicy, not the economy, and so a fairer report card would also assess his actual policies. What is startling is that the economists are nearly unanimous in concluding that Mr. Trump’s policies are destructive. That is why many economists are uneasy about his presidency, even though the economy earns solid grades.
Mr. Trump’s #protectionist impulses place him squarely at odds with the economic wisdom that tariffs are harmful. Mr. Trump’s #fiscalpolicy is a colossal failure. His signature achievement is a $1.5tn tax cut that provided stimulus when, arguably, it was least needed. Mr. Trump’s luck was to inherit an economy that had been on a steadily improving glide path since around 2010. Charting nearly any economic statistic shows that today’s economic strength represents a continuation of that trend.

An A- for the #USEconomy, but Failing Grades for Trump’s Policies

President Donald #Trump has made no secret of the fact that he thinks lawmakers are wasting their time trying to come up with a funding solution for #bordersecurity. But the 17 members of Congress tasked with reaching that compromise are just trying to forge ahead. Staffers worked over the weekend to hammer out a deal.
But while members of the committee are still expressing optimism they can work something out, there is a sense, even within the Republican Party, that the President’s comments pose a stumbling block, and that he is trying to control an appropriations process he doesn’t understand.

It took US President Donald #Trump 35 days to sign off on a bill that he could have had before Christmas. Before the president walked away from the table in December, a similar agreement was on the table to temporarily fund the government, but not Trump's beloved boondoggle, a #borderwall. Back then, the dealmaker-in-chief boasted in an Oval Office meeting that he would be "proud to shut down the government" if he did not get funding for his wall. Finally, more than a month into the shutdown, he has announced a deal that Democrats had been offering since the beginning: Decouple government and wall funding for a brief period while negotiating about border security.
Trump had consistently balked at the idea - until he didn't, and suddenly caved on Friday (Jan 25). Trump's reckless triggering of the shutdown just before Christmas meant that 800,000 government workers and their families have had to make ends meet while going without pay for over a month. Not to mention the more than 1 million government contractors who went unpaid - and who, unlike the government workers, will not receive any back pay.

What a debacle President #Trump’s shutdown proved to be - what a toddler’s pageant of foot-stomping and incompetence, of vainglory and self-defeat. Mr. Trump tormented public servants and citizens and wounded the country, and, in conceding on Friday after holding the government hostage for 35 days, could claim to have achieved nothing. He succeeded only in exposing the emptiness of his bully’s bravado, of his 'I alone can fix it' posturing.
On Friday (Jan 25) he caved. With a growing number of overworked, stressed-out air traffic controllers calling in sick, staffing shortages at two airports on the East Coast began to snarl air travel. Republican lawmakers were already in a foul mood. Along with their concerns about the human cost of the shutdown, Republicans were no doubt antsy about the negative impact the shutdown was having on their president’s public standing. Polls consistently showed that most Americans did not support the shutdown and that most blamed Mr. Trump for it.
