3. The targets of the latest attack were around Damascus, which is in proximity to Israel. The jets don't need to enter "deep into Syrian territory" to accoplish such a mission. If such an tactic has been used, it would have taken place in the attack on T-4, which further away.

2. We've all seen the photos of Damascus with SAM missles flying all over, so they clearly attacked the airplanes they saw. If they truly thought they were US planes, they wouldn't do such a thing.

Three points:
1. Putin doesn't "greenlight" attacks because it's not up to him whether Israel will attack or not. The Russians are simply informed about attacks in advance to make sure there are no accidents and that Russians are not present in the targeted spots.
