Yeah the lack of transparency is devilish here.

Vipin's right. And stepping back from the maximalist position could still lead to a lot of good for the US and the region. We're seeing the perfect be the enemy of the good right now with Iran. We shouldn't make the same mistake on North Korea.

Like you said, its not denuclearization, but it would be better than the current state of affairs even if they retain other HEU sites.

Any estimate of how much a hypothetical full closure of Yongbyon (reactor, HEU enrichment site, reprocessing hall) would cut into the North's ability to produce bombs/year? Seems like it would still take a big bite out of their arsenal-making capability, assuming we get all three

Nice shot of the YJ-12.

Trump is talking about the test in a dumb way, which is both true to form and not good, but based on where it will be deployed and who was at the exercises, this thing isn't intended to be a nuclear system even if it can perform similarly to a nuke-capable Russian system

*whispers: minimizing the importance of the Kimskander in order to keep nuclear-focused diplomacy going is fine. Based on how DPRK talks about the missile and who was at the exercises it doesn't seem to be a nuclear platform

Just imaging the line "Horse-Like Lady" being sung in the style of Jethro Tull's "Cross-Eyed Mary"

Last night someone tweeted out a list of the officials that were in the room with Trump and Kim, but I forgot to retweet or like it. Does anyone know if Kim Yong Chol was in the room?

Tucker, Jared, and Ivanka shouldn't have been there. But banishing Bolton to Mongolia was the right call. Why give the North Koreans extra reasons to be tense and untrustworthy when you're trying to break a diplomatic logjam.

On symbolism v substance, it is entirely reasonable to focus on the lack of detailed agreement. But the leaders of US and NK, after being at a negotiating deadlock for months, just met on incredibly short notice to try and move things forward. That should strike you as important

The US and North Korea, faced with a diplomatic logjam, were able to have their two leaders meet face to face on incredibly short notice in order to work out a potential way forward. That's seems like a pretty substantial development to me.

The US and ROK have also held military exercises. In fact, the exercises held this spring were used by the North to justify a test of a new short-range ballistic missile test in May. The exercises have been pared down but there hasn't been a full stop.

I pointed this out last night but she is wrong. The first item of the Singapore Joint Declaration was about establishing a new US-DPRK relationship. It made no mention of North Korea declaring its arsenal.
