A few asked for instructions on making the enchanted rose i made for my wife.
Step 1. The glass. You can find this with its base at ikea. Its a new item in the flowers section, near candles.
You're going to need a drill bit capable of cutting glass. I used a 3/16ths bit found at home depot for $7 cad. (cheaper in the us). 3/16ths because thats wide enough for my screw to fit through, judge yours accordingly.
The drilling is the hardest part. You need patience with glass. I found lower rpm and next to no downward pressure got the best results.
Dont change the angle too much as you go, wear glasses and dont brace it against your body in case it cracks apart.
A good trick to get it started is to put painters tape over where you will be drilling, this prevents the drill from wandering before it bites.
[FRONT PAGE EDIT] Users with more glass cutting experience than I have noted that HIGH rpm is better. Also, they suggest using sticky tack to start the cut, and using water to absorb vibration. Also, they suggest sanding the cut afterward with a bevel edge [/EDIT]
The crystal knob I also found at home depot, pretty cheap, in the cabinet door handle section. Remember to use the screw size to determine the drill bit size.
The screw the comes with it you will need to shorten, or replace with a shorter one with the same thread pitch. I happened to have a shorter one laying around.
Glass is fragile, especially now that youve just drilled a hole in it. Use double sided foam tape to create a soft gasket on the knob. This way you wont crack the glass when screwing it together, do the same to the head of the screw.
The double sided foam tape. Typically advertised as a wall mounting tape for pictures etc.
Get the thinnest, least visible thread material you can find. My original build i used a hair strand, but for the purpose of this demonstration im using 6 lb nylon fishing wire. Place the line across a small strip of the 2 sided foam tape and fold it over. Keep the backing on for now.
[FRONT PAGE EDIT] Another user wisely suggested that Fly Fishing Tippet would be even harder to see than 6 lb fishing line [/EDIT]
Cut the excess.
Tie the other end of the line to the screw. Font forget the foam on the screw, otherwise you might crack the glass later.
Cut and bend a cloth rose to resemble the enchanted rose from the movie. Make sure its short enough to easily suspend between the glass and platform.
