Over the past few months, many of us in the Bangalore open source community have focused our efforts of writing test cases for Fedora, organizing a few sessions where one can learn about testing, and how we can do things together. All this while, it has been fun: I’ve met new people, learned things, and realized that sharing even small pieces of knowledge and experiences makes it easier for newcomers to feel welcome.

Organizing a release party

At one point when Fedora 24 was released, it was exciting as we were closely involved with Fedora release validation testing and so we wanted to put together a release party. All open source projects encourage their communities to celebrate software release and similar milestones. Ours was a simple plan! We were having a really good time learning together and we wanted to get more people to know that there is a better way to gain knowledge: by sharing and working together.

For some time now, Fedora has discussed the idea of the Fedora Outreach Steering Committee (FOSCo), a body to coordinate all our outreach efforts. Now it’s time to make it happen!

Fedora 24 Release Party: SFVLUG Event Report

On July 2nd, 2016, the San Fernando Valley Linux User Group (SFVLUG) in Lake Balboa, California, celebrated the release of Fedora 24 at their regular meeting. Fedora Ambassador Perry Rivera (FAS: lajuggler) helped coordinate these efforts at their regular meetup at Denny’s. To help celebrate the launch of Fedora 24, Perry brought some install media and a Fedora cake. The release party helped introduce Fedora 24 to a new group of users by providing them with the software and help to get Fedora 24 for themselves. This report details the release party events with SFVLUG and the impact from the event.

Many important packages and software are developed for Fedora every day. One of the most important parts of software development is quality assurance, or testing. For important software collections in Fedora, there are sometimes concentrated testing efforts for pulling large groups of people in who might not always help test. Organizing a Fedora Test Day is a great way to help expose your project and bring more testers to trialing a new update before it goes live.

Most of the time, you will be able to test software updates without help. But for larger software or packages crucial to Fedora, having more eyes and hands to poke around is useful and helpful. This post explains and walks you through the process for organizing your own Fedora Test Day and what work goes into it.

Southeast Linux Fest (SELF) 2016

The Southeast Linux Fest (SELF) is an annual Linux conference in the southeast region of the United States. This year, the conference ran from June 10 – 12, 2016. SELF was located in the Sheraton by the airport in Charlotte, NC. As expected, the booth site was the same as the earlier years while at this venue. Booth placement plays a vital role in visibility and accessibility. When presentations finish, attendees come out and the first booth visible is Fedora.

Do-it-yourself site MakeUseOf recently highlighted Fedora Design Suite from their article “6 Linux Distros Designed for Artists, Musicians and Editors“. They also called the Fedora Design Suite as the “best of the basics”.

Another way to push package updates to stable in Fedora Bodhi

Bodhi is a web application that facilates the process of publishing package updates of Fedora. Once a package is submitted to Bodhi it goes through various stages: Pending, Testing, Stable, Obsolete. The details can be found here Package States.

There exist two types of policies in Bodhi, using any of them maintainers can publish their package updates (Pushing updates to Stable from Testing). Updates Policy documentation: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Updates_Policy

Updates Policy in Bodhi:

Manually push to stable based on time :
- Auto-karma is disabled.
- Update spends 14 days in testing.
- Maintainer pushes the update to stable manually.
Automatic push to stable based on karma :
- Auto-karma is enabled.
- Stable Karma threshold is reached.
- The update is pushed to stable automatically.

At the second round of Fedora 24 Final Go/No-Go Meeting, Fedora 24 Final RC1.2 has just been declared as GOLD. GA of this release is planned on Tuesday 2016-June-21.
