David REALLY??? So you're curious about white trash vampire lit, RA?

message 2: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Yeah...I read Burroughs, Fante, and Greene, right in a row...so I'm takin' a literary smut vacation. I can send you this after I'm done. Hey, that reminds me, did you ever finish Twilight?

message 3: by David (new)

David Fante is literary smut though.

And RE: Twilight. No. And there's a reason for that. I don't want to flush any more of my life than necessary down the toilet. And Twilight is truly a garrulous, godawful mess.

message 4: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Yes, I guess Fante waking up in Mexican hooker's room and crushing her dentures because she stole his wallet is smut, but it's a terrifying kind of smut...

How far did you get in Twilight?

message 5: by David (new)

David Maybe a third... but I think I got the 'flavor' of it. And, as they say, it sure wasn't vanilla.

message 6: by Michelle (new)

Michelle RA, are you going to read the whole series? Did you ever finish watching True Blood season one on DVD?

RE: 3 and 5.
: (

message 7: by RandomAnthony (last edited Feb 11, 2010 03:13PM) (new)

RandomAnthony I don't know if I'll read the whole series...I only read the first Outlander and Twilight books, so probably not. But I do want to finish the True Blood season, maybe when the kids are out of town...David can come over and we can sit on the couch and talk about who's cuter, Bill or Eric...

Jackie "the Librarian" Are you done yet, RA? You should be, it's not exactly a dense read.
What did you think, is Sookie cute, or insufferable?

message 9: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Are you callin' me out as a slow reader, librarian? What if I want to bathe in every word, marinate in the prose, exalt in the literature? You got a problem with that?

message 10: by Gary (last edited Feb 14, 2010 03:17AM) (new)

Gary RA, last summer I read the whole series, well, all that were in paperback, first 7. i ended it then. not classic lit, but fun! What motivated me?? HBO'S fantastic take on the story. I thought it was totally fun, hilarious, and engaging, and being one of the few men to read them all... I have to say, a nice trashy novel once in while is fun, especially in the summer. Looking for the 8th book to come out in paperback soon, and the 9th in hardback, well , will wait for the paperback..... and plan to rent season 2 on dvd when it's available.

message 11: by Gary (new)

Gary Sookie is cute, librarian. Typical stereotypical ,southern flake, a bit naive, well a lot naive, and just plain fun stuff....

message 12: by Gary (new)

Gary So... think less of me ,David, the dude that does the classic stuff actually reads smut, and trashy novels??? Btw, I didn't start Twilight, nor do I intend to. I've heard too many people say the writing is poor, poor, poor, and I am not into pre- teen chick lit stuff anyway..... so, that's the scoop!

message 13: by Michelle (new)

Michelle ...I stand by the statement under the assumption that the author didn’t turn into Shakespeare in the book’s final third.

She did. And you missed it.

message 14: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Damn. And I had just put the charred remains of the book in a special landfill for hazardous materials...

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle ***SPOILER ALERT***

It ended just like Hamlet. It was actually quite brilliant.

message 16: by Misha (new)

Misha I agree that the TV series is superior. I've maintained as I've read the series over the last couple of months that Harris' choice to tell the story from Sookie's first-person POV was a mistake. I much prefer the TV show's ensemble approach, which allows the supporting characters to be much better drawn than in the novels.

message 17: by D. (new)

D. Pow I think Amy Grant is sexier than hell.

D. Pow she's a frigging goddess. she can save me from hellfire any old day.

message 20: by David (new)

David You two are FUCKING WEIRDOS.

message 21: by D. (new)

D. Pow ha ha ha! I knew you wouldn't be digging the Amy Grant love, Kowalski.

message 22: by Dave (last edited Feb 27, 2010 09:41PM) (new)

Dave Russell What is Charlie Sheen territory? Hookers dressed as cheerleaders and lots of knives and crack?

Jackie "the Librarian" (note to self: do not recommend this series to guys)

message 24: by RandomAnthony (last edited Feb 28, 2010 01:21AM) (new)

RandomAnthony Kowalski, Donald and I might come down to South Bend and show you an Amy Grant-themed powerpoint, but no matter what we say, she won't have big enough boobs for you.

Dave, I meant the quality of Charlie Sheen's work...not his personal life. I would haved liked this book better with cheerleader hookers and knives and crack.

Librarian, no! I liked Rampant, too! This isn't a "guy" issue, unless this shitpile of a novel had an anti-guy quality not present in the other "girl" books I like.

I should add that this book physically repulsed me. Some nights I dreaded this book, like, "holy fuck, I have to read that again? No way." A book hasn't impacted me in that manner in years. I almost forgot abandoning it was an option.

message 25: by Bram (last edited Mar 01, 2010 03:24PM) (new)

Bram I'm with you guys on Amy Grant. I still have some of her cassette tapes. Sometimes all I need is a little Baby Baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46QAja...

Seriously.

I almost bought a live DVD of hers in a Christian bookstore a couple years ago...and I still regret my cowardice.

message 26: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Why were you in a Christian bookstore, Bram, other than to look for Amy Grant DVDs?

(They have them? Now I must check them out.)

message 27: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I went into a Christian bookstore once...by accident. I was looking for a Stanislavksy book, and hey, it was a bookstore. So I walked right up to the door, opened it, took one step in, cast a sweeping glance over the giant labels above the shelves, smiled at everyone, and walked right back out. Brrr...

Oh, it's a long story. I was in Iowa and there was no regular bookstore in the entire mall.

message 29: by Kim (new)

Kim Oh, Anthony... you and your testicles are just racist. I'm sure it's a southern thing. Don't lie.

message 30: by RandomAnthony (last edited Mar 08, 2010 02:28AM) (new)

RandomAnthony There aren't enough black people in the book for me to be racist. My testicles must dislike southern white trash.

(By the way, I can say that, since I grew up white trash, although in Chicago...)

message 31: by piranha (new)

piranha wait. you say this is one of the worst books you've ever read, which makes me think you've lived a literary sheltered life. lucky you! ;)

but you liked twilight? my mind, it boggles. this book is never going to make my "recommend it to anyone i respect" list, but twilight is on my "should be burned unread" list. so much worse!

at least harris has come up with some fun ideas, which fortunately inspired the makers of the show (the twilight movie is just as horrid as the book) -- and without setting feminism back 200 years (though sookie fails the bechdel test most of the time, she can hold her own to some degree and isn't the despicable role model bella is).

but we agree that the show is much better than the books.

message 32: by Selena (new)

Selena I HAD NO IDEA HOW RIGHT THIS REVIEW WAS. I'm suffering through it because I can't quite give up. But god, this is.... bad. I love the show so much - how is this possible?
