Alexandra But there was no incest!

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) You're kidding me right?

Did you read through the end? I had stopped close to the ending. But to the point I had read there was no incest.

Alexandra Unless I was wrong. Then I must re-read it.

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) Yeah, I read until the end. My thoughts didn't change.

S.L.J. You'd be surprised how many stories have incest. Star Wars, Mortal Instruments, Throne of Glass...not to mention pretty much all of Greek Mythology...hmm, does it still count if they are celestial beings?

message 7: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn Haven't read the floor book but where is the incest in Throne of Glass? Obviously Luke and Leia kissing, and Sebastian lusting for Clary, that's obvious, but where's the Throne of Glass incest?

message 8: by S.L.J. (new)

S.L.J. Rowan and Aelin are related. Distantly, but they are family.

message 9: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn I...that's pushing it. Rowan's like, 12-times great-grandmother is the like, 10-times great-aunt of Aelin's grandmother...I mean, that's Aragorn and Arwen distant. Kate Middleton and Prince William distant. I mean, by that standard, anyone having sex with anyone is incest because if you go back far enough they're related. Rowan and Aelin are like, 25th cousins or something.

So actually, they're even further apart than Princess Kate and Prince William. They're like, 15th cousins. And the Anglican Church doesn't consider that incest, so...

message 10: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn Correction, I got one thing wrong: Rowan's 12-times great-grandmother is like, the 10-times great-aunt of Aelins' great-greatgrandmother. So yeah, like, 25th or 27th cousins...

As for "incest" between step-siblings, again I haven't read this Floor book, but a child's lovemap is cemented and their relationships - parental, sibling, etc. - established by the time they're about 7 or 8. Which means step-siblings who didn't grow up together before I'd say, age 10, and hook up - that's not incest because they weren't raised with the idea that this person is a family member. And while sometimes that sibling bond clicks fairly quickly, neurologically the step-sibling doesn't fall into the same mental category as a sibling (step or otherwise) a person was raised with before the establishment of their love-map. Just saying.

Hence why we have books like Emma by Jane Austen...or Sense & Sensibility.

S.L.J. I spos it's how you look at it. I'm very, very, very distantly related to Dame Judi Dench, which I think is amazing because she's a legend but I wouldn't have sex with her. :P

message 12: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn Yeah, but I wouldn't either - she's like, 80. Also married, I thought?

But like, I'm distantly related to Prince William, and if he wasn't married and wasn't going bald, I might sleep with him (if I wasn't Mormon).

message 13: by S.L.J. (new)

S.L.J. Hey! Judi's in her prime! :P And Rowan's 300+ years old. Would the romance still be there if he looked his age? And Judi is way more intimidating...actually, now that I think about it, she's more intimidating than any of the Throne of Glass characters...

Harry's still got his hair. :D

message 14: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn She is legitimately 82 (or almost 82). Too old for me.

And Rowan, while chronologically 300+, is Fae, and in Fae terms, he's about 20. Which is pretty sad when you think about all he's experienced. He was like, 16 (Fae-wise) when he met Lyria.

Okay, that's a good point - he's pretty cute. Did some dumb things but he seems to have grown up now.

But my idea of age-appropriate relationships is a little different from some people's. My dad is 14 years older than my mom, my sister's boyfriend is like 12 years older than her, and my brother is 14 years older than his fiancée. And when you add immortality, the rules can get screwy if maturation of the species isn't explained.

Geraldine I totally agree with this review so much, Jeann! I also thought of it much like a futuristic Gossip Girl, and Watt was one of the better characters for me. I don't know about you, but the ending felt kind of empty to me, and unresolved :(
