I’m pleased to announce an all new Real Food Styling & Photography Workshop to be held Saturday, April 9, 2011 at our studio in Long Beach, California. This is a 1-day workshop focusing on food styling and food photography with stylist Adam Pearson and blogger & photographer Matt Armendariz and promises to be packed with information (and fun!) in a very intimate setting.
So what’s this workshop about? It’s a small, hands-on day of styling and photography for 8 students only. We want to keep this workshop small so that we may all have the opportunity to work together not only in the kitchen but also on set, working with natural light as we discuss the ins-and-outs of food photography. But what excites us most is the focus on real, edible food for this workshop and none of the tricks stylists sometimes use to make food inedible. This class is geared towards anyone with an interest in styling and photography such as bloggers, chefs, photographers, foodlovers and just about anyone else wanting to get more out of their food photography and styling.
The first half of the day will be spent on food styling and photography theories. You’ll learn how to style food for the camera and watch was as we put all that good stuff into action on the set. After lunch each student will have an opportunity to style their own food and photograph it, taking advantage of a real working studio as well as under the guidance of a professional stylist and photographer. Ask questions, explore and play, that’s what this workshop is about!

• Composing, building, editing and styling a plate of food for photography
• Ingredient selection and taking care of your food
• Creating movement and texture with food
• Using props to communicate your story
On Food Photography:
• What makes a successful food photo
• Selecting the best camera angle
• Making natural light work for you: how to diffuse, modify and supplement light
• Understanding your camera’s settings and demystifying Manual mode

About your instructors: Adam Pearson is a food and prop stylist. Known for his spontaneous, fresh approach to styling, his clients include Crate & Barrel/CB2, Kohls, Food Network, Los Angeles Magazine, Chiquita, and Whole Foods Market. Matt Armendariz is a photographer that specializes in food & travel and is also the creator of Mattbites. His recent clients include Cooking Channel, Coastal Living Magazine, Culture, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine as well as a variety of cookbooks and publications. His first book On A Stick! is out this May.
