Q: A word for describing thinking of something as better

You can “idolize someone too much” or you can “give someone too much credit”
 
@Yotam Salmon Try playing around with the idiom, "to put [someone] on a pedestal".

@Jim: As a Brit, I'd rather be idealised, obviously. But I run a broad church, so I've instructed my fan club manager not to reject applications from illiterate Americans! :)

@FumbleFingers- After your suggestion I tried to think whether i actually meant idealize or idolize I think idealize is better, but my thought was that one tends to overlook flaws and exaggerate positive traits in one's idols.
