The Ari Roland Jazz Quartet (NY) and young Pakistani musicians reflect on a 2009 U.S. Department of State cultural exchange visit and impromptu concert in a residential basement in Islamabad which sparked a years-long friendship and a foundation for continued cultural diplomacy. Jazz has an unique ability to bridge cultural differences and create mutual understanding. In 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day to highlight the importance of jazz as a diplomatic tool and its ability to unite people around the globe. This year, President Obama will host the International Jazz Day concert at the White House, broadcasted on April 30. Go to JazzDay.com for more information.
