Today's Shero of the past features Harriet Tubman- . *Harriet was born a enslaved and was raised on Maryland's Eastern Shore where the lines between slavery and freedom were blurred. Although her husband was a free black man. Her status, remained unchanged until she fled to Pennsylvania – a free state – in 1849. . *Tubman's work was a constant threat to her own freedom and safety. Slave holders placed a bounty for her capture and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 would impose severe punishments on any person who assisted the escape of a slave. . *Harriet had Narcolepsy. She could fall asleep any time and any place. Which made helping slaves to escape that much more difficult. . *Harriet freed herself in 1851 using the system known as the Underground Railroad. Which was a network of secret routes and safe houses to escape to free states. . *After she was free she said, " I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person now that I was free, there was such glory over everything, the sun came up like gold through the threes, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in heaven." . *After freeing herself from enslavement, Harriet returned to Maryland to rescue other members of her family. . *If you were an enslaved person and you would like to escape, someone would sing ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot' as a signal and you would be smuggled out to different safehouses. . *With Thomas Garrett, a Quaker abolitionists of Wilmington, Deleware, Harriet aided in liberating over 3,000 enslaved Africans. . *She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. Despite this she was later denied payment for her wartime service. . *After the war ended, Harriet Tubman helped a biographer publish her life story. . *In following years, Harriet became dynamic public speaker/storyteller. She worked to promote the cause of women's suffrage alongside women such as Susan B. Anthony to help ensure rights for ALL women. Tubman travelled to New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. to speak out in favour of women's voting rights. When the National Federation of Afro-American Women was founded in 1896, Tubman was the keynote speaker at its first meeting. . She is why we March.

Today's #ActivistADay features @jackieines - I think my activism definitely comes from a place of healing; I am a woman, i am a black Puerto Rican, I am queer. Things that the world at large either denied or chastised me for. I continuously speak myself into existence in a world that seeks to erase it, and that itself is a radical act. It is my firm belief that while, yes- we need to survive the present world- we should also be preparing ourselves to and focusing on building a new one. Our way of life is unsustainable: socially and ecologically. Empires fall, and we are bound to see the fall of this one sometime in our lifetimes. Too much of bourgeois activism is focused on "fixing" this world as it stands; they want change but are not willing to give up their small conveniences. People expect change from a system that's working exactly the way it was built and continue to be surprised and disillusioned when it does. We're going to have to embrace discomfort to get anywhere. We need to come to terms with the fact that will may never see the fruit of our efforts in our lifetime, but that we are building the foundation for so many later on. Let go ego, embrace discomfort. What inspires YOU to march with us? Here's why @misskings_ marches: "I'll admit, I never had the ovaries to protest or stand for something or speak out. And my heart still picks up speed at just the thought of doing so. But then I thought - in order to make a difference, I need to BE different. I can't always expect other people to defend my beliefs or to speak for me. Especially if I don't put the work in myself. So next month, I will march - the day after the inauguration of our new president - because I want to prove to myself and to show the world watching that we matter and that we care. I march for the people who don't have the means to have their voices heard. I march for all my friends and family of color, culture and different walks of life who ever told me they were scared and who held me whenever I was too. I march for all the women in my life whom I love and support. I march for all the little girls that need a less difficult path to their future, void of all the stigma and harsh criticism. Today's #ActivistADay features @blackmonalisaa - As a woman of color, activism for me is very necessary and very powerful. I've never marched or protested on the streets, but I admire those who do. It takes so much courage and bravery to go out there and be a voice for our people. When it comes to oppression I do my best to not to dwell on the idea. For a long time I was angry and many times didn't want anything to do with white people due to the negative encounters I've had. But I try to stay positive and think of my blackness as a super power, it makes me stronger than the rest.
