Scratch that: Opposition leaders Lapid and Gantz say they're suspending judicial talks at President's Residence. "No committee, no talks," per Lapid. Netanyahu needs his coalition to pick a coalition rep to make the committee whole - will this happen? Unclear.

Update: Amid divisions within own coalition, Netanyahu's Likud reportedly wants to use parliamentary regulation to delay below vote by 30 days (i.e. to vote today against all candidates). Opposition threatening to leave negotiations immediately. Shekel already weakening.

Israeli politics, crunch day: After 2.5 months of "pause" in judicial overhaul amid ongoing negotiations at President's Residence key Knesset vote today to choose 2 MKs for Judicial Appointment Committee. First real test of Netanyahu coalition's intentions & also for Bibi himself

More to the point: It's one step on the Netanyahu coalition's road to hypothetically taking over committee (several more things need to happen) and perhaps a means to blow up the ongoing talks, force a crisis, and push for unilateral passage of parts of judicial overhaul. TBD.

Why does Judicial Appointment Cmte Knesset reps matter? Need 7 cmte votes (out of 9) to appoint Supreme Court justices (which coalition won't have even w 1-sided vote today). BUT can appoint lower court judges w only simple majority & may allow opening to pick next Chief Justice

Hence it's the 1st real test not only for entire judicial overhaul issue/crisis but also for Netanyahu's leadership of his own coalition. Can he keep Justice Minister Yariv Levin & the other hardliners in check? The vote is via secret ballot so surprises are possible.

Judicial Appointment Committee chooses the judges. Makeup is 2 govt ministers, 3 Supreme Court justices, 2 lawyers from Lawyer's Syndicate & 2 Knesset members - historically 1 from coalition & 1 from opposition. This is what the vote will be on today via secret ballot.

If Nissim had built this somewhere else w/out a permit, say (hypothetically) in the West Bank, maybe he’d have more political backing. But he has a small group of supporters that are trying to stay the eviction order in court. Please spread the word. Save Nissim. And his house.

The place has come to be known as “Nissim’s House” or the “Hermit House.” Admittedly he just showed up and started digging w no permit. The local mayor at one point hooked him up to water + electricity and gave him a postal address. Nissim used to run a kiosk from the shore.
