Incredible responses, ranging from accusations of pedophilia (!!!! incredible horseshoe theory going on with QAnon wingers) to calls for me to kill myself. I missed this site!

This ties nicely into one of the articles I wrote while I was gone, about the "bullying is good" idea that has spread through some left-wing online communities, which I disagree with jessesingal.substack.com/p/on-alex-gold

3/ If a right-wing Twitter rando openly posted a/b how they were armed and seeking to publicize the private information of left-wing journalists, Ben Collins' erection would be visible from space. No one cares about the steady drip of Twitter threats from these sorts of lunatics.

2/ Maybe someone will throw a brick through the immigrant-owned wellness studio's window to defend marginalized people. (First floor is a hardware store. I have had to previously warn the owners of this business after a different sort of internet troll issued similar threats.)

This is not my address and absolutely raises the risk of someone getting hurt. Folks like this really shouldn't be on Twitter -- in a small but meaningful way they increase the risk of genuine violence directed at journalists. Please report this stuff when you see it.

2/ Even this -- a really basic principle of working with juvenile populations -- is considered controversial in some influential corners of youth gender medicine. So it's a big deal to have someone this high in the hierarchy say it out loud.

1/ This is an important article from Scott Leibowitz, a psychiatrist who led the adolescent section of the WPATH SoC and who I've quoted in the past, on the need to take a reasoned, careful approach to the youth gender medicine controversy.

Sean, can you point to where Eric Wemple suggested that trans people's lives are a matter of debate? I'm worried you're arguably doing that same thing here you did in the letter, making claims that perhaps seem, to the average observer, to be dishonest?

Dumb question but why was Conor McGregor booed BEFORE the incident with the Heat mascot? I don't follow this world at all so I'm oblivious as to why he is a candidate for insta-booing?

4/ Tom Scocca got a lot of attention by claiming the NYT had written 15,000 words of Bad (according to Tom Scocca) articles about trans people. He left out the denominator -- something like 891,000 words on trans issues, the vast majority of it completely uncontroversial to libs.

3/ The president of WPATH, according to the Times, has declared that journalists simply shouldn't write about this issue at all, because if they do bad people could do bad things. Good luck with that!

Wemple is Good, and there are few Wemples left in the field of media criticism. Just witness all the media criticism outlets that covered this particular uproar without asking any of the questions Wemple asked about factual problems w/the letter itself

Just as a side note, through the years Wemple has been willing to go after Trump and Fox News/Dominion and the UVA/Rolling Stone hoax and his own paper and the Steele Dossier, he seems like an honest actor

2/ There was a fundamental incompetence to the letter, including links not coming close to backing up the factual claim and, in some cases, downright lies, that make me wonder (hope? I guess?) many of the signatories didn't actually read it and were pressured into signing.

2/ Like... the fact that there are all these interesting cultural conceptions of demonic possession and multiple selves etc. probably shouldn't influence your treatment of a circa-2023 American woman experiencing severe distress and profound dissociation, no?

Next newsletter is about the AMA and Endocrine Society's deeply dishonest statement on youth gender medicine, and how if respectable institutions pull stuff like this over and over and over, they shouldn't complain when it empowers Alex Jones types

. could we talk about this in some sort of public venue? I can't recall any other time a fellow journalist has called for me to be incarcerated and I think it could make for an interesting convo.

"Medical intervention is reserved for older adolescents and adults" The AMA is spreading obvious and easily debunked misinformation. We're moving toward a world in which there's no reason to trust major institutions and that's scary.

3/ Can't emphasize enough that people have memed themselves, by sheer consumption of ultrapartisan punditry, into an alternate reality that ignores decades of research on sex differences. This stuff is wild and helps you better understand much more serious cases like Stalinism.

This is sort of what I mean. It's just gaslighting. 30 seconds ago everyone understood the need for some sex-segregated instutions. This activist move of just demanding NUH UH THAT'S NOT TRUE ANYMORE without *any* intellectual effort/persuasion... it's just an utter failure.

i definitely noted the invocation of "separate but equal" which seems absurd given that the entire history of gender discrimination law (unlike with racial discrimination) is to preserve some form of separation and equality (women's colleges, restrooms, sports, etc.)

2/ If you are a Majority FM host or whatever you will get endless likes and adulation and professional oportunity by repeating this obviously crazy position, while making absolutely no effort to render it less batshit. But don't complain when normies disagree!

I would gently suggest that there is a connection between declining support for the new orthodox position on issues like trans women in sports and the popularity and endless recitation of arguments like "Sex-segregated sports are just like Jim Crow."
Quote Tweet
Replying to @ryangrim
Because the societal interest of including trans people in our social institutions -- not in "separate but equal" categories -- trumps arbitrary standards of competition in sports. We're talking incredibly small numbers here. Your solution "others" and isolates trans people.

New from me (w/preview): Saira Rao of "Race2Dinner" is back w/something that smells very much like a grift: a call for white women to protest the governor of Colorado for not signing an obviously unconstitutional, obviously useless executive order on guns

Rather than ticket people who use beer on the streets, why doesn't the city consider a 'harm reduction' approach? A network of 'safe ingestion sites' for people to use beer, free from consequence, where volunteers could ensure that no one is overserved by providing salty snacks.

2/ This piece isn't just about Rao, but about what happens when the fixation with white women's quests for racial ablution starts to genuinely infect activism/policy reform efforts. It isn't good!
