Do you use readxl? Now is a good time to test drive the dev version on GitHub; it goes to CRAN soon. I’m also on the hunt for public spreadsheets that are large enough to test and justify a readxl progress indicator. Suggestions?

My kid wants me to find some document in his room and text him a picture. I know it can be easily found online. I am holding the line. He will thank me for this one day.

One of the weirdest phenomena is this: random tool writes xls[x] because … spreadsheets!!! But some people just want to get the data into R. And thus we embark on a truly absurd journey of conveying data in the most pain-in-the-ass way possible.

. hypothetical: User can opt-in to manage a fork like so: master branch is protected, user cannot push to it, must work in a branch. master branch can be synced w/ main repo in the browser (maybe automatic?). Repos can disallow PRs from a master branch.

More reflections: AoC makes you regret part 1 solutions that work, but are inefficient. Part 2 generally makes you care a lot about big O. Whereas, in data analysis, you usually get punished by getting a new **input** that’s weird in some novel way.

I love doing . But it also reminds me of the stark difference between general purpose coding and scripted data analysis. I think a lot of “language wars” stem from people having no clue what the other camp actually does day-in and day-out.
