Gotta love when supposedly progressive members of the City Council complain about poorer ppl in south Brooklyn getting faster transit service because it poses a minor inconvenience to Park Slope.

Reading Max Weber’s “Politics as a Vocation” on the centenary of its delivery to a group of Frankfurt students in the midst of the German Revolution. I am forever struck with his world-weariness, prescience and insight. His conclusion:

I will forever associate Hebrew Israelites w whose minor obsession w them has now become a national concern in the most quixotic of circumstances.

If this were the 1950s, the ppl in JFREJ would be cheering on the Doctors’ Plot purges and the executions of Mandelstak and Babel. This is who they are: rigid dogmatists who turn critical thinking on its head.

So pathetic that JFREJ crowd exists primarily to give figleaves to ppl like Tamika Mallory. And let’s not even mention that so many meet neither halakhic nor sociological definition of Judaism. I’m a leftist almost down the line, but here we have essentially Stalinist retreads.

I think that old quote from Tacitus would apply well to clickbait and its apologists: they make a wilderness and call it peace.

The best piece to come out re: events at the Forward. Really brings out the extent of mismanagement, flailing, the pity of it all. I hope Fwd can right course. But I wouldn’t count on it as long as clickbait (which never works and is deeply undignified) is the order of the day.

A random apercu this morning: as the bottom falls out of the creative professions, has neoliberalism created a new class of superfluous men, who like their forebears in the Russian 19th c. have little outlet for their education, training?

So, the obituaries we see flooding in are really rather belated. The paper is - and I suppose will continue to be - a zombie publication that continues the tradition of its founders and best leaders only in its name.

While I feel bad for most who lost their jobs today, others (in management) participated eagerly in the teardown job and had no compunction acting in a predatory manner toward those of us junior in the newsroom.

The Forward’s cardinal sin was not that it was leftist mouthpiece, but rather that it became intellectually thin, stocked full of pablum and provocation. And what it did was worse than yellow journalism, because at least then one acts to advance ideas based on principle.

And the full story breaks. It’s terrible for Forward to continue down a path of steady decline. But as a former staffer, I can say with confidence that its embrace of sensationalism, volume over sober reporting, depth had already deeply compromised it.
