Traditional, gendered attitudes are proving difficult to shift - twice as many #fathers as #mothers believe flexible workers are viewed as less committed to their job and more than twice the number of fathers believe working flexibly will have a negative impact on their career. #Presenteeism seems to be alive and well in 2017.

Unsurprisingly this 'flexibility gap'; between what working parents want, and are entitled to ask for, and the culture and attitudes they come up against in the #workplace breeds negativity. Overall more than a third of parents told us they felt resentful towards their employer about their work life balance. Nearly half of fathers have lied or bent the truth at work about their family responsibilities.

Research by Simplyhealth and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) shows ' #presenteeism' is on the rise. The 2015 survey showed that in the preceding 12 months, a third of firms reported a rise in employees working when they’re sick, and this has some pretty clear negative effects on #employeewellbeing. Organisations that have noticed an increase in presenteeism are nearly twice as likely to report an increase in stress-related absence and more than twice as likely to report an increase in mental health problems among their staff too.

#Leaders and #managers set the tone, and have a responsibility not just to their organisation but also to the #wellbeing of their employees. To perform at their best, people need to be well both physically and mentally. If businesses want employees who are engaged and motivated, then employees need to feel that their #organisation, their managers and bosses are supporting them, and not pressuring them to work when they are not properly fit.

However, while absenteeism certainly is an issue that creates a big loss to the economy, is it #presenteeism – absenteeism’s steadfast yet misguided cousin – that’s actually costing your small business more?

Quite often employees will fail to inform a manager if they are suffering from #stress and if they do, no mitigating action is taken. Lack of action can lead to deeply serious and complex afflictions amongst employees such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia but we are also talking about mild depression, anxiety and addiction. These are conditions that are becoming increasingly more common in the #workplace. Depression, stress and anxiety show now boundaries. They can affect any employee in any industry at any time whatever their age or experience

The difficulty for employers is that many of these symptoms can be tricky to identify. #Absenteeism as a result of stress related symptoms and conditions is problematic; however, what is of far greater concern is #presenteeism, where employees are present in work but under performing due to health challenges. An employee could endure a significant period of presenteeism before absenteeism takes hold. The cost to the business of this prolonged period of presenteeism is potentially massive.

It can be an employee’s biggest dilemma – should you go into the office when ill? A recent article in The Telegraph (25th August 2017) highlights the growing problem of presenteeism – a word coined as the opposite of absenteeism to describe this problem.

"Professor Sir Cary Cooper at Manchester University has referred to it as the biggest threat to UK workplace productivity, costing the UK economy almost twice as much as absenteeism."
