#Britain’s foreign secretary, #JeremyHunt, has appealed over the heads of Brussels negotiators directly to #France and #Germany to try to force the European Commission to strike a 'sensible and pragmatic' #Brexit deal. Ahead of talks with his opposite number in Paris, Mr Hunt accused Brussels of waiting for Britain 'to blink' in negotiations as he claimed the chances of the #UK leaving the #EU without a deal were 'increasing by the day'.
Mr Hunt warned the EU’s chief negotiator, #MichelBarnier, that his approach to the negotiations would inflict a 'breakdown in relations and trust' between Britain and the continent which would be a 'profound geo-strategic mistake'. However, Brussels insiders have repeatedly pointed out that Mr Barnier and his Brussels negotiating team are only acting on the orders of France, Germany and the rest of the 27 EU countries. Any inflexibility originates from the nation states.

In the first major assessment of the potential economic impact of the government's white paper plans for #postBrexit arrangements, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research calculated #UK #GDP would be 2.5% smaller over the next decade than if the UK chose a 'soft #Brexit' similar to Norway's relationship with the #EU.
The calculation underlines that while some commentators have styled the so-called Chequers deal as a #softBrexit, it will nonetheless leave the UK considerably weaker than the status quo. The NIESR economists added that the plan is also likely to push up inflation by around 1.4%, due to a further fall in the pound.

Evidence is mounting that the #UnitedKingdom’s impending exit from the #EuropeanUnion is causing workers from #EU countries to leave the country and return home. Workers from European Union countries are leaving the country at the fastest rate since the ONS started tracking such data. Comparing the data period - April to June 2018 - with the same period last year, the ONS said that there were 86,000 fewer EU nationals in jobs in the #UK. In total, 2.28 million EU nationals work in #Britain. 86,000 out of 2.3 million may not seem a huge amount, but the ONS pointed out that it was 'the largest annual fall since comparable records began in 1997.'

If no deal is reached, #Britain would withdraw from the #EU on March 29, 2019 without any of the trade, customs and regulatory measures May’s government is currently negotiating to smooth Britain’s transition. At the end of August, the #UK government will release detailed guidance to businesses on what will happen if the country crashes out of the E.U.
Britain’s economy is closely tied to the E.U.’s. The bloc is Britain’s biggest trading partner, accounting for 44% of all U.K. exports. May has already secured a 21-month 'transition period' as part of the negotiations, giving Britain time to pursue free trade deals. But if British lawmakers or more than seven E.U. countries reject whatever deal the U.K. forges with European negotiators, that transition period will not come into place - and Britain will face an uncertain future from March 29 next year.

#Britain and the #EuropeanUnion are working towards a withdrawal treaty and a framework agreement for future trade. But the gap between the two sides is large. And there is a possibility that, even if a deal were agreed, the British Parliament might reject it. Yet #Article50 provides that withdrawal will happen automatically unless there is unanimous agreement to extend the timetable.
Hardline #Brexiteers are happy with this idea. They say Britain would do fine trading with the #EU on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms, like most third countries. Yet because there has been only limited preparation for a #nodealBrexit, it is likely to be disorderly. Britain would fall out of EU regulatory bodies for things like air safety, medicines, nuclear materials, food and car inspection, and would not have time to create new regulators of its own.

#Britain would run out of food on this date next year if it cannot continue to easily import from the #EU and elsewhere after #Brexit, according to the National Farmers’ Union. #Foodsecurity in Britain is in long-term decline, with the country producing 60% of what it needs to feed itself, compared with 74% 30 years ago, according to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
While Downing Street has insisted it is confident an agreement can be made in time, the international trade secretary, Liam Fox, warned over the weekend that the prospect of a #nodealBrexit was now at '60-40', fuelling fears at the NFU and among food importers.

The risk of a #nodealBrexit has been increasing and the #EuropeanUnion commission needs to change its attitude if a deal is to be reached, according to British foreign minister #JeremyHunt. With less than eight months until #Britain quits the #EU, the government has yet to agree a divorce deal with Brussels and has stepped up planning for the possibility of leaving the bloc without any formal agreement.

The #UK's Brexit negotiations with the #EuropeanUnion are at an impasse - that's according to Prime Minister #TheresaMay. In a letter to her own divided Conservative party, she admits that, surrounded by red lines she is not allowed to cross, she can neither push ahead nor turn back. Brexit can't be too soft or too hard, or else the various parties and the EU will be unable to reach an agreement. Brussels has rejected May's latest proposal, which would have meant negotiating a kind of #freetrade area only for goods.
There are no viable proposals either on trade issues or the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. The British government is set on a vague statement about its future relationship with the EU. However, Brussels is insisting on a concrete exit treaty that would at least finalize essential questions regarding finances, borders and civil rights. It is clear that time is getting short. A Brexit deal is supposed to be in place by the end of October. That is tight.

The #EU needs to 'change its approach' to avoid a #nodealBrexit, according to #JeremyHunt. The foreign secretary called on #JeanClaudeJuncker's #EuropeanCommission to show a 'pragmatic approach' to negotiations. The government is understood to be ramping up warnings of a no-deal over the summer, after #TheresaMay faced criticism from some Conservative #Brexiteers for her Chequers proposal. Mrs May has insisted that 'no deal is better than a bad deal'.
