The #Trumpadministration has a new strategy for deflecting concerns about the warming planet. #Trump officials are minimizing warnings from scientists by arguing they are exaggerated and based on the worst-case scenario. They say the National Climate Assessment (NCA) - an expansive federal government report on the dangers of climate change in the US - considers only the highest possible levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Trump said he did not believe #climatechange would have economic consequences for the US.

Global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations appear to be the highest they have been in 3m years, and continued carbon growth is likely lead to carbon levels not seen in tens of millions of years. If humans greatly reduce the greenhouse gases spewing into the atmosphere, continuing warming will still pose wide-ranging dangers.

Thirteen U.S. government agencies have just issued an alarming new report predicting that #globalwarming, if allowed to continue unabated, will shrink the #Americaneconomy by 10% by 2100, amid environmental impacts that are, if anything, even more dire. The White House tried to bury the report by releasing it during the holiday weekend, and President Donald #Trump announced he didn’t 'believe it.' But its conclusions are inescapable.

The top of the world is now warming at twice the average global rate. You’ve likely seen the graphs and stats: Last winter, maximum sea-ice cover narrowly missed being the smallest ever recorded — a dubious honor that goes to the winter of 2016-17. The changes that warming is bringing to the Arctic affect much more than a couple of exotic whale species; they are transforming the region’s lands as well as waters. For creatures as various as majestic caribou, diminutive seabirds and humans here and around the world, the results are dire.

Next week will see thousands of people arrive in Katowice, #Poland, for the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on #ClimateChange, otherwise known as #COP24. Taking place between December 2 and 14, a lot is riding on the summit.

The Paris Agreement, reached at #COP21 in 2015, will loom large over events at Katowice. According to the United Nations, COP24 is important because this year marks the deadline agreed by signatories of the Paris Agreement to adopt a "work program for the implementation" of the commitments they made in 2015. Other commitments made in Paris include increasing financing for climate action and the development of 'national climate plans' by 2020.

President Donald #Trump on Wednesday (Nov 21) once again disputed the science of #climatechange, questioning how this week’s Thanksgiving cold spell could occur as the planet warms. On Friday, scientists working for his administration gave Trump a stark answer: climate change is a menace that threatens the wellbeing of the United States. The phenomenon is already disrupting local communities in the U.S., and could cost the #USeconomy hundreds of billions of dollars a year without a significant effort to stop it.

The landmark new report, which comes from more than a dozen federal agencies and is known as the National Climate Assessment, includes more than 1,000 pages and the work of more than 300 authors breaking down climate change’s impacts in specific regions across the country, touching on everything from agricultural changes to sea-level rise to health effects. The timing of report’s publication also raised questions about White House interference. The document was originally scheduled for a mid-December release, but officials said at the last minute they would publish it on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

While surveying the devastating damage caused by the deadly #California fires, President Donald #Trump was asked last week whether the experience altered his views on #climatechange. On Friday (Nov 23), the US government released the second volume of the Fourth National Climate Assessment, which warns about the potential long-lasting impact of climate change if we don’t make major changes. The report, like many before it, stresses the importance of cutting #greenhousegas emissions and investing in renewable energy technology before it’s too late.

Leaders of the Group of 20 have found the minimum common ground to fix #globaleconomy after difficult, all-night talks in #Argentina, but only 19 of them agreed to support the Paris agreement on #climate. #UnitedStates President Donald #Trump diverged with his #G20 partners at the summit in capital, Buenos Aires, as he refused to back the global action on #climatechange and by watering down past pledges to fight trade protectionism. A final communique, adopted on Saturday (Dec 1), said all the other G20 members agreed to implement the 'irreversible' Paris Agreement while respecting different paces of economic development.

The #CampFire was one of the deadliest wildfires in #California state history. Perhaps most worrisome is what lies in the state’s future, when the smoke has finally cleared to reveal a very different real-estate landscape.
