Open Textbooks 4 Africa is designed to help support the adaption and adoption of Open licensed textbooks across Southern Africa. We are a pilot project launching an astronomy textbook for the Global South (with the sky the right way down) and supporting the adoption of currently available open-licensed textbooks.
Textbooks prices have skyrocketed globally, but as the Rand takes a hit so does the price of textbooks for already overburdened students in South Africa. In April 2014 StatsSA put textbooks inflation at 13.6%.
Globally open licensed textbooks for university students is gaining traction. Faculty from nine colleges and universities across the United States have saved their students an estimated $1.5 million in textbook costs to date by adopting open textbooks, the University of Minnesota’s Open Textbook Network reported in October 2105
