I watched it earlier this year. I have to say I was surprised. I definitely lost respect for McDonalds and makes it feel dirty. However, like you said, I was amazed at the original foundersโ€™ vision. I felt like it was MUCH like Chick-Fil-A, which has maintained much more of its original vision (or as much as a huge company can)

Right now, Quill handles that for me, so when I "like" a tweet URL from my browser, it also gets liked on Twitter. Now that I'm using the Indigenous iOS app more, I'm missing that step so when I "like" a tweet from my phone, it doesn't actually like it on Twitter. Awesome! I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll be able to finish that feature in my Micropub endpoint soon enough to include it as part of my newwwyear goal, but itโ€™s definitely up there on my list!

In Reply To Co-claiming and Gathering Together โ€“ Developing Read Write Collect by Aaron Davis

Thanks for this great piece, Aaron! I really enjoyed reading it and it echoed a lot of my thoughts as I started implementing IndieWeb technologies into my site early this year.

It started that I had begun blogging and wanted to make sure my stuff was readable using microformats. Then I got interested in posting my microblog posts instead of twitter. Then I started tracking what I watched, what I ate, and the journey has just carried on.

The interesting thing Iโ€™ve noticed is two things: First, as you said, thoughts are much more helpful than in Twitter because you are more thoughtful about them. Second, itโ€™s interesting how things that initially might interest you can change over time and having a website allows you to own that change in mind and adapt as you see fit!

๐Ÿ‘ Eddie liked My project for today's IndieWebCamp Austin was initially to update my fork of Quill for posting read posts. I started by getting my fork of Quill updated. As I was working through some questions about how to include the action being taken on the book (โ€œwant to read,โ€ โ€œcurrently reading,โ€ โ€œfinished reading,โ€ etc.), Aaron helped me realize I was working a bit backwards and should start by publishing microformats properties that indicate the status. I updated a recent read post to include microformats property p-read-status with a value of โ€œwant-to-read.โ€ I will continue experimenting with other values for that property. I am thinking โ€œreadingโ€ for currently reading and โ€œfinishedโ€ for finished reading, but I donโ€™t have any of those published yet. I also added property p-read-of on the h-cite. This causes the cited work to show up as a property of the h-entry when itโ€™s parsed, not just as a child object. Props to Aaron for helping get me on the right track for this! In Reply To Martijn asked if I had documented the micropub request I make for read posts. I had not yet, so decided to make some quick notes while it's fresh in my mind. Currently, it sends an h-cite object with properties: status, url, name, author, and isbn. Each of these properties is optional. If nothing is entered in the field in Quill, the property is not sent in the request. The h-cite object also has a content property which has an html key. The value of that key is the HTML for the citation. This serves as a fallback in case the site does not process the micropub h-cite object directly. For example, my own site displays this since I do not yet process the h-cite object. Finally, the h-cite object has a summary property, which is a plain text version of the content property. Unfortunately, I have not been actively using this on my own site. This is in part because I'm still getting used to the idea of using a micropub client to post to my site instead of using the posting interface directly on my site. I am still interested in developing it further, though. I think once it can pull up a list of the user's books, I will find myself using it more. by gRegor Morrill

What Micropub app do you use to send that?

Hi Cory, You talked about some of the disadvantages in using social media. You specifically listed the fact that โ€œsome people post way too much information about themselves.โ€ This is very true and can have unintended consequences in addition to the examples you listed. For example, in an article on the guardian, several millennials describe reasons they have quit using social media. Celan Beausoleil, a social worker from California, explained that โ€œA lot of my job is I willingly listen to peopleโ€™s lives all day every day, and it started to feel so overwhelming to go on social media and see every single detail of everybodyโ€™s lifeโ€ (Brait, 2016). Other reasons that millennials used for stopping use of social media was that they felt like they spent too much time on social media and that they wondered what they could enjoy if they spent that time doing something else. Another issue being that when peopleโ€™s romantic relationships end, the emotional hardship is added to because they have to decide if they should change profile photos or change their relationship status. It can add a lot of baggage to a time that is already hard enough as it is (Brait, 2016). Besides that, another downfall of sharing so much information on social media is that the companies never delete your information. Which means, for better or worse, your life choices and decisions of photos, activities and notes that you choose to post are stored in their archives forever.

Please note, the post below is a school assignment that required that I write a post with a contrary view of the thread which meant I had to defend software piracy, which is something that I DO NOT support or condone. This is purely an academic exercise.

Hi Bobby, Thank you for your thoughts on software piracy. You had some interesting points both on legal and moral grounds, but there were a couple things I thought I might respond to. First, you mentioned that a Christian shouldnโ€™t use unauthorized software because it is considered stealing and that the Ten Commandments forbid theft. This however, is under the assumption that a Christian is living under The Law rather than by grace. I would argue that a Christian is free from the law, and thus the idea of stealing software, an already abstract concept is not a sin. Second, you argue that software piracy is limiting jobs as you mention that โ€œlowering software piracy by just 10 percentage points during the next four years would create nearly 500,000 new jobs and put $140 billion into ailing economiesโ€ (Dale & Lewis, 2016, p. 191). I would argue that plenty of businesses donโ€™t hire more employees when they get more money and the lack of software piracy doesnโ€™t necessarily mean there would be more jobs but just that the owners of these software companies would make more money. Considering the fact that the majority of software piracy is for over-priced software by large companies like Microsoft and Adobe, the likelihood of jobs actually being affected is fairly low. Finally, I think it is important to reflect on the fact that software is abstract. Most people that pirate software either donโ€™t have the means to purchase it or wouldnโ€™t purchase it, even if they didnโ€™t pirate it. In this case, software piracy isnโ€™t affecting anyone except it allows the person who pirates the software to be able to use something to better their life that they wouldnโ€™t have had access to before that. Thanks for your time, Eddie

In Reply To 3:20 am and I can't sleep after a "whooping" episode. I know the cough can last for months but I had hoped that these episodes would have tailed off by now. Before being diagnosed I thought the coughing had triggered a return of my childhood asthma; the feeling of being unable to breathe is pretty similar - at least from what I remember. It just never occurred to me that it could be anything else and I was prescribed inhalers on the basis of it. Needless to say that they don't have any impact. The "whooping" mainly happens at night, it's a textbook case, and the broken sleep amplifies everything. The physical tiredness from this combined with the impact of the coughing itself is so draining but the sheer frustration of not being able to talk is still the worst part. by Colin Walker

@colinwalker.blog Iโ€™m sorry to hear that. I havenโ€™t experienced whooping cough but I also had Asthma the first 15 years of my life so I understand the feeling. Itโ€™s horrible feeling like you canโ€™t get enough breath. I hope the symptoms wear off quickly for you.

It may be down the road a tad for micro.blog support, but it's also something that micro.blog could do to change the microcasting space. It could also be a useful differentiator for competing services like Twitter, Mastodon, etc.

They are just pieces of my own site I open sourced, but the way I cut them off might break things. I am actively working on two new ones at the moment, with some 'official' IndieWeb libraries, with unit testing, hopefully even with panel widgets. They should be much more stable and user friendly than the old ones. So I am not asking to come back now, but please, let me ping you when I got the new ones ready. I hope you will like those. We're a long way from general adoption, but we can make steps.

This is a great read! Iโ€™ve been wanting to do placeholder images like this on my website but havenโ€™t had the time to investigate. Iโ€™m happy to be able to reference this article now when I get a chance to invest in putting this feature into my website.

    Site updates: showing emoji reactions

Inspired by Eddie Hinkle's recent post about viewing webmentions, I decided to improve the way I display webmentions on my site. TL;DR, my site now pulls attempts to recognize single-emoji comments and display them as a "Reaction".

    Site updates: Displaying Webmentions!

I'd like to include a JavaScript enhancement that will show any new mentions, so they aren't sitting in "limbo" until I make a new post.
In Reply To Marty McGuire on https://martymcgui.re/

This is the conundrum with static sites in the IndieWeb world. How do you enable a live, real-time engaging site when your site is built to be static?

My solution thus far has been to build a node.js app that runs on the same site as my Jekyll server. Iโ€™m actually using a lot of node.js to rebuild my site: When my git repo gets a new commit or when I hit a secret URL and soon, when my site receives a micropub request, it causes Jekyll to pull down new code from the repo. Then it runs a local node.js script that fetches recent Goodreads data that gets dumped in my Jekyll /data directory, and Jekyll gets rebuilt with all of the data. The other situation I came across was if I updated Goodreads but nothing else. For that case I decided daily was frequently enough so at 2am my time, my site always rebuilds (again caused by my node.js back engine).

    User Experience and the IndieWeb

Web browsers have also ceded ground to silos, focusing purely on navigation, tab management, and search, rather than thinking about the bigger picture. The ideal solution to this problem would be a native application for desktop operating systems and mobile platforms that places user experience at the forefront, and provides: Content consumption, Content creation, and Rich interactions
In Reply To Jonathan Lacour on https://cleverdevil.io

This is a great, well thought-out post on what is needed for the IndieWeb to get to a place of wider adoption and for these principles to begin to challenge the place of Twitter and Facebook. There is a reason that large numbers of everyday people didnโ€™t use the internet until Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. It was the innovations around the ease of use and the fact that everything was in one place.

I know that Jonathanโ€™s thoughts echo what has been floating around in the back of my mind and I hope is a challenge to everyone that reads it. The building blocks that have brought the IndieWeb to the place it is have been vital and important. However, that lack of unified experience is what left me not fully engaged for years. Iโ€™ve come around to the IndieWeb recently because I believe the building blocks have begun to develop to a point that it is possible to begin thinking about what unified experiences in a โ€œWeb 2.0โ€ Open Web world means.

The web needs its own App Store

Imagine visiting a site's landing page, getting a description and some screenshots, and then seeing a button that says "$1.99 for full access". If, as a user, you could click on that button, enter a password, and then immediately have lifelong access to the site โ€“ I bet you'd do it. $1.99 is a price lots of people are willing to pay, even if there's a risk involved with trying out the site and then finding out you don't like it.
In Reply To Mark Hendrickson on http://markmhendrickson.com

I ran across this article from 2009, it was an interesting thought piece. But one thing that sticks out to me is how much the iOS App Store has changed in the years since this was written. Back in 2009, you could sell an app pretty easily for $1.99 but in 2017 it is highly unlikely that anyone will pay $0.99 before being able to download and use your app. Instead of the web becoming more like the App Store, the App Store has actually become more like the web, trying to make an income off of subscription services or ads.

The Legacy of St. Patrick: Missionary to His Slave-Masters

Against considerable opposition from family and friends, Patrick left his newfound comforts and gave his life to the cause of gospel advancement among the Irish, who were known for idol worship. Enduring insults from unbelievers, slander from believers, imprisonment and discomfort, he held to his belief that Ireland needed Christ...After just a few decades, more than a thousand Irish would profess faith, by Patrickโ€™s own reports.
