A lot to discuss here, though I’d push back hard on the argument that the gig economy provides some sort of employment salve in the face of automation — look at Uber’s impending push to self-driving cabs. If anything, gig jobs function as bridges between full employment and automation. Mechanical Turk is a good example of that.
And to the question of what TaskRabbit customers are up to while they’re employing a "tasker" — I don’t know. I focused on what the ad campaign presented, which was entirely leisure activities.
Absolutely, this is in no sense a conviction of crime, and ultimately Burstein doesn’t present a smoking gun or a confession. But the interviews in the film are certainly damning, particularly with those closest to McAfee during his time there. And you’re right that the murder of Faull is not news, but the allegation of rape of his coworker and the murder of David Middleton is.
The documentary deals a lot with Belize’s limited capacity for serious investigation — they country doesn’t have a single DNA lab. Burstein says the FBI is currently investigating the crimes, but couldn’t tell me the status of that investigation.
Apologies for that, it’s been corrected!
Great reading voice!
Fixed! Apologies for that
