Why the government can still succeed in digital without Mike Bracken

aug 07 2015

There is no doubt that Mike Bracken has transformed the way that government has approached all things digital. He has masterminded the extension of public services online and has been a part of presenting a huge opportunity for the UK, by touting the ‘government-as-a-platform' vision - a common core infrastructure of shared digital systems, technology and processes. You only have to look at Twitter to understand how highly he was valued. Tributes rained in from his colleagues and those who have admired the work he has put in to the Government Digital Service and to Whitehall overall - he has been labelled as Britain's most effective civil servant, a visionary and a champion of technology. And because of how highly he is regarded, many are now switching their attentions to the doom and gloom of a government without a leader who really "gets it".

Tim Moody, chief technical officer of Fujitsu HMRC, said: “As HMRC rapidly moves to digital, it gives us a number of exciting opportunities and we feel working in partnership with smaller, agile suppliers like Memset helps us bring continuous innovation to HMRC projects, which will in turn drive down costs.” Memset has recently secured Official over PSN accreditation from the Cabinet Office for a range of services, as well as direct PSN-Protected connectivity.

Memset highlights change in SI behaviour

jul 16 2015

UK-based SME cloud infrastructure provider, Memset, has been singing the praises of one of the leading suppliers of infrastructure services to the UK public sector – Fujitsu. And indeed the praises from Memset MD, Kate Craig-Wood went further, wrapping in the SIs in general. The comments come as Memset reveals it has been signed by Fujitsu to deliver infrastructure hosting services to HMRC from its OFFICIAL/IL3 data centre. Fujitsu recently became a direct contractor to HMRC after its subcontract to Capgemini was novated (on 1st Jan). Craig-Wood states: “The partnership is a clear indication that SIs are really starting to change. They are recognising that working with SMEs like Memset is vital for them to be able to deliver best value and innovation and continue to secure public sector contracts”. Fujitsu has a good track record of working witFujitsu logoh SMEs. In our last UK public sector SITS supplier landscape report we highlighted that the company had over 800 SMEs in its supply chain, benefiting from 20% of Fujitsu’s external revenues. It has recognised the need to embrace more SMEs within its public sector contracts in order to help deliver the UK Government’s SME agenda. With Memset, it has found an SME with OFFICIAL over PSN accreditation from the Cabinet Office for a range of services, as well as direct PSN-protected connectivity. Moreover, Memset’s hosting infrastructure is built entirely on open source software, meeting the Government’s desire to utilise open source technology. For Memset, the relationship should open up more opportunities than it would have had as a stand-alone SME. All our research indicates that smaller companies welcome working indirectly via large partners. That’s as long as they treat them well. We’re sure Craig-Wood will make certain of that.

Should the strong US dollar prompt European CIOs to shop around for cloud?

jul 09 2015

The growing strength of the US dollar has big implications for European CIOs' IT budgets, as unfavourable exchange rates with the Euro force technology suppliers to raise their prices to make up the shortfall. It’s a trend analyst house Gartner has been cautioning IT chiefs to watch for several months now, as it fears US suppliers may resort to “obfuscation techniques” to push product price hikes through without users realising. Microsoft has already publicly confirmed plans to increase the Eurozone pricing for its Azure public cloud platform from 1 August 2015 to counteract the effect of the strong US dollar against the weakening Euro.
