"Our assistance to refugees and migrants in detention in Libya, as basic as it is, is essential.”

A few days ago, our Libya chief of mission, Samer Haddadin, met refugees and migrants in the Abu Salem detention centre in Tripoli. It was Samer's first visit to Libya since June 2014, when all UN international staff were evacuated for security reasons. Since then, we have been working in the country through our national staff in Benghazi and Tripoli, and partners.

We are pleased... to see Samer back in Libya, working directly with refugees and migrants on their crucial needs.

The world is at a critical juncture. We are witnessing the highest level of human suffering since the Second World War. This is why, for the first time in the 70-year history of the United Nations, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has convened the World Humanitarian Summit.

On Monday leaders - including UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency officials - meet in Istanbul to stand up for our common humanity and take action to prevent and reduce human suffering.

The world will come togeth...er to make commitments and announce bold actions in support of the five core responsibilities of the Agenda for Humanity:

1) Prevent and end conflict
2) Respect the rules of war
3) Leave no one behind
4) Working differently to end need
5) Invest in Humanity

Moments in a childhood under siege - awaiting the aid delivery with excitement.

Kids in East Harasta, a farm town in rural Damascus were among those to receive the first aid to reach their town in 4 years, this week.

With partners we formed an aid truck convoy, reaching 10,000 people in need of assistance. Just some of the 4.5 million Syrians living in hard-to-reach areas or besieged areas.

...

800,000 Syrians have been reached over 50 convoys this year, benefiting from the pause in hostilities that began in February.

We are proud to work with partners to get aid to those most in need in Syria.

Only 50% of refugee children are in primary school and 25% of refugee adolescents are in secondary school.

That's one of the alarming findings of our new joint report with UNESCO, released ahead of the World Humanitarian Summit, where we are calling for all children and youth who are forcibly displaced to have access to quality education within three months of displacement.

“I left Syria for the sake of my daughter. I want her to have a childhood. I moved her from school to school until there were no more left.”

As head of the microbiology department at the University of Aleppo, Darie did not want to leave Syria. She moved as the war moved, shifting neighbourhoods as barrel bombs and mortar fire advanced. She stayed until the mere act of staying alive became overwhelming.

Ultimately, in July 2015, Darie, her daughter Mayas, her husband Salahadd...in, her two sisters and her elderly parents joined the 2.7 million Syrian refugees who live in Turkey, a country that hosts the largest number of refugees in the world. Syrian refugees here have temporary protection status, after registering with the Turkish authorities. This allows them to benefit from assistance, medical care, access to education and to the labour market, which came in January.

“I love it here,” Darie said. “I have friends here. But this is not something permanent. My husband is not here. I miss my research. I want to teach in a university.”

Please read and share their story:

“As we tackle the greatest humanitarian crisis since World War II, no refugee should be left outside”

More than half the refugees around the world live in urban areas, and the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson has called for greater efforts to help them integrate.

"We must dispel the myths", said Eliasson, saying that cities and policies need to reflect the value – and diversity – that refugees bring to societies.

When people are forced to flee. You can help shelter them.

Today we launch a new global campaign – ‘Nobody Left Outside’ – which aims to raise funds from people like you, to shelter 2 million refugees by 2018.

“Shelter is the foundation stone for refugees to survive and recover, and a non-negotiable human right,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

We face a half billion-dollar deficit in providing places to live for more than 15 million refugees under our care.

Walking down the street holding hands with his boyfriend could have got Subhi Nahas tortured and killed in his hometown of Idlib, Syria.

“My family has never accepted me for being gay. I was afraid that my own father would some day tell."

Subhi found safety in San Francisco, where he was resettled with the help of UNHCR and two other organizations working to get lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) refugees out of dangerous environments.

...

"I always dreamt about San Francisco because it seemed like a place where I could be myself".

“It went completely against the sentiment of giving your old clothes to the poor, helpless new arrivals. It was more about just being young people here in Berlin, having that in common and making the best out of it.”

“We didn’t want to go down the classic route of giving ad-hoc aid, where refugees tend to end up getting stuck in this position of being helped. We wanted it to be an exchange between equals from the very start. We wanted to do more than waving at them in a train... station and instead start helping shape their new lives here.”

Nina, from Start with a Friend Berlin, explains the approach of this German volunteer initiative, that matches asylum-seekers with local contacts to help them find their feet and start anew..

In just 18 months, Start with a Friend has matched 400 pairs. The simple premise of teaming up asylum seekers and refugees one-to-one with local partners has struck a chord in Germany, where efforts are being stepped up to integrate more than 1 million newcomers who sought asylum last year. In January, the project secured government funding and now employs seven full-time staff in four cities.
