Eliminating the Trafficking of Children and Youth

July 13, 2016, 3pm-5pm Carol Smolenski, executive director of ECPAT-USA will speak on “Eliminating the Trafficking of Children and Youth” (organized by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See, in cooperation with the NGO Committee to Stop Trafficking in Persons, the Salesian Missions, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and ECPAT-USA). Panel experts will address some of the key dimensions of this crime against children and youth that has led to trafficking and other forms of modern day slavery. Included in the discussion will be the following topics:
    • Trafficking and Child Labor
    • Use of the internet in the trafficking of children and youth
    • Criminalization of homeless children who have been trafficked
    • Giving voice to victims of child trafficking and assisting in their healing
    • A personal testimony of a survivor of child trafficking
    • Advocating for the protection of children and youth from trafficking
    • The Faith community as a leader in ending trafficking

Public Policy and Government Relations

The Global Study on Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism is the most thorough, up-to-date and authoritative look at the issue of sexual exploitation of children in many years. It was conceived as a report describing how and why children are vulnerable to traveling sex offenders, but its in-depth analysis goes beyond looking at travel and tourism links and provides a description of the environmental, community, personal, political, social and cultural considerations that make children vulnerable to exploitation. It shows how the ills of society like crime, poverty and corruption impact families and communities, and how those problems link directly to making children vulnerable to sexual exploitation.

To protect every child’s basic human right to grow up free from the threat of sexual exploitation and trafficking. ECPAT-USA does this in four primary ways:
ECPAT-USA advocates for federal and state legislation that prevents exploitation, protects children, and guarantees that any child who is subjected to sexual slavery or sex trafficking will not be prosecuted in the courts for prostitution;
ECPAT-USA promotes corporate responsibility among private companies with a strong focus on the tourism sector.
ECPAT-USA educates first responders and ordinary citizens about this issue so that they can identify victims and join us in the fight to better protect children.
ECPAT-USA empowers youth to take the lead against human trafficking by equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to help them become activists against this terrible trade.
