Don’t Bring a Knife to a Gunfight

A guy on probation thought it would be a good idea to commit a robbery. He was wrong. Rancho Cucamonga homeowner shoots and wounds knife-wielding burglary suspect – Press Enterprise

A homeowner shot and wounded a knife-wielding suspected burglar in his garage Saturday morning in Rancho Cucamonga, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department news release.

So now he is in hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, and facing more time in prison.

“Luckily the homeowner also had a firearm to defend himself and his family.”

A couple of armed miscreants jump a fence.

“The people living in the house were taken by surprise by apparently two armed men. They were [grilling] outside when the suspects jumped over the fence,” said [Riaan] Volschenk [from GCS Security]

(Editor’s note. I don’t usually edit quotes except to better identify folks I’m quoting, but I figure most people wouldn’t know braaiing means grilling meat. For more context, GCS Security is private, armed-response in the Pretoria, South Africa region. Z-Deb)

A 28-year-old in the home was shot in the arm, and transported to a local hospital.

The quote in the title to this post is also from the GCS Security guy, Volschenk. GCS was first on the scene.

The rest of the investigation has to wait on police.

July 16, 1945: Dawn of the Nuclear Age

The GadgetJuly 16, 1945. 5:29 AM Mountain Time, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. (Shamelessly stolen from myself, from last year.) Click the image for a larger view of the Gadget.

The Gadget was detonated – the 1st nuclear explosion – by the Manhattan Project. It was a plutonium implosion device.

At 05:29:21 (July 16, 1945) local time, the device exploded. It left a crater of radioactive glass in the desert 10 feet (3.0 m) deep and 1,100 feet (340 m) wide. At the time of detonation, the surrounding mountains were illuminated brighter than daytime for one to two seconds, and the heat was reported as being as hot as an oven at the base camp. The observed colors of the illumination ranged from purple to green and eventually to white. The roar of the shock wave took 40 seconds to reach the observers. The shock wave was felt over 100 miles (160 km) away, and the mushroom cloud reached 7.5 miles (12.1 km) in height. After the initial euphoria of witnessing the explosion had passed, test director Kenneth Bainbridge commented to Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer, Now we are all sons of bitches. Oppenheimer later stated that, while watching the test, he was reminded of a line from the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture: Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

(The Gadget was similar to Fat Man, which was dropped on Nagasaki on the 9th August that year. Little Boy, which was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th, was a uranium gun-trigger.)

Video of the blast is all over YouTube. Here is a short one.

The best documentary I have seen on The Manhattan Project is The Day After Trinity. It doesn’t seem to be anywhere for streaming.

It was later determined to be an 18-to-20 kiloton explosion. (The equivalent of 18,000 tons of TNT or more) Relatively small by modern standards. Thermonuclear – or hydrogen – bombs are measured in megatons. (The largest – Tsar Bomba of the USSR – measured 50 megatons)

LAPD Officer accused of sex with 15-yr-old now charged with weapons crimes

Uphold the law. Break the law. Whatever. LAPD officer accused of having sex with teen cadet is charged with weapons crimes – LA Times

Investigators seized more than 100 firearms, including assault rifles and inert grenades, sources with knowledge of the investigation have said. Sources said many of the weapons had been illegally modified and are not legal to own under California law.

The original arrest was part of an investigation into “teen cadets” that apparently stole police cars, radios, tasers and other such things. (I wonder what the stated goals are of that program for teens – probably not achieving those goals.)

A search of the house turned up the weapons. And while I’m sure that the California laws are crazy, the police are supposed to uphold the law, not consider themselves above the law.

What was up with hair in the 80s?

There were some strange things being done with hair in the 80s. And these guys weren’t even the worst offenders.

This is “Lies” from the Thompson Twins. It was the first single from the 1982 album Quick Step and Side Kick.

Something about the opening of this song makes me want to say, “It needs more cowbell.” This album was re-released in 2008 with a bunch of remixes added and some of the extended B-sides.

Because of the crazy way the music industry works in the US, this album was Side Kicks on this side of the Atlantic. I think it has to do with the complete lack of respect that the industry holds for its customers. (What is Quick Step?)

Don’t Bring a Box Cutter to a Gunfight

JusticeHe suffered a breakdown of the victim-selection process. Would-be car thief with box cutter shot by car’s owner – KMOV.com

According to police, a 56-year-old man discovered a 35-year-old man attempting to steal the victim’s car.

The suspect then lunged at the victim with a box cutter, but the victim shot the suspect in the leg in self-defense. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, and is listed in stable condition.

He thought he was bad-ass with his box-cutter. But he picked the wrong guy to try and rob.
