The effort to rescue the oil tanker #FSOSafer off the coast of #Yemen has begun. Germany had a leading role in its support. We keep our fingers crossed for quick success - for the sake of our environment and for the benefit of the people in the region.

We began the operation to remove the oil from #FSOSafer, a decaying supertanker moored off Yemen's coast, threatening a humanitarian & environmental disaster. Thanks to many partners, incl. #EU 🇪🇺 and #TeamEurope 🇳🇱 🇩🇪 🇸🇪 🇫🇷 🇮🇹🇩🇰🇫🇮🇱🇺🇬🇷🇲🇹🇨🇾 for supporting this critical operation.

On 24 February 2022 he ordered the missile bombardment of Kyiv in a speech promising a swift resolution to Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. On 30 May 2023 he is reassuring Russian citizens that Ukraine's drone bombardment of Moscow is nothing to worry about.

In his AL speech, Assad explains why he's sitting on the proverbial Iranian "lap". Translation: Syria's past, present & future is Arab. Being Arab means belonging to Arabism. Arabism is not defined by what lap you sit on, laps r temporary, they come & go, but Arabism is forever.

Went down a rabbit hole and found out that the co-founder of Gypsy Kings is a guy called Jalloul Bouchikhi who's originally Moroccan. His brother, Ahmed Bouchiki, was assassinated in 1973 by Mossad agents in Norway. Bouchikhi, a waiter, had been mistaken for Ali Hassan Salameh.

I'm thoroughly enjoying ⁦⁩' Black Wave. She brilliantly connects a handful of modern historic events that ended up shaping our messed up region while highlighting the lesser known human rights heroes that are often neglected in this part of the world.

In 1977, Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most influential 20th c. Spanish-language writers, told William F. Buckley (whose first language was Spanish) his reasons for feeling, age 78, that English was 'far finer' than his native tongue. Right or wrong, I love his savor for language
