    What so often gets forgotten or ignored in Central European politics today: the region used to be a very diverse place, before the genocides & ethnic cleansings that turned some countries into near monocultures. Seems many who are nostalgic for the past there don’t realise this

    In the nineteenth century Christian Hungarian-speakers didn't even amount to a majority of the population in what was then Hungary. In 1910, about 23% of Budapest's population was Jewish. Now, Orbán doesn't want to "create a country of mixed population."
