The Guantanamo military commissions system is truly broken (again). And if you aren’t following , you should be.

Thoughtful and good piece by : "There is a danger in allowing for the degradation of civil-military relations, especially in today’s political climate. Military leaders are not our saviors."

This is wrong on so many levels, starting with the government-caused ethical issue that led these lawyers to resign and the fact that the military judge does not have the power he thinks he has. New low (again) for Guantanamo military commissions

This system explicitly targeted users’ First Amendment protected speech and association. It treated ordinary citizens discussing ordinary affairs as justifiable targets of surveillance. What it did not do, according to the documents, was deter or help solve serious crimes.

Catching up on 's terrific work on local police & deeply problematic social media surveillance: between 2014-2016, Boston police tracked racial justice activism----and conducted broad surveillance of Muslims. Via

Wow! President Trump has accurately described ... life for people wrongly placed on the government’s No Fly List. (And yes, we are challenging this lack of due process.)

Diane Foley, mother of James Foley, who was horrifically killed by ISIS: I certainly don’t want them to go to Guantanamo or any place like that, because something like that would just bury the truth. I think there needs to be a public, open and fair trial

‘Speaking truth to power’ a phrase, we often use. lived, practiced till her last breath. Questioned mullahs, military, judges, politicians, all the powerful;defended downtrodden. Faced threats & attacks. Was never afraid. What a hero. We have to contend with a void.

Trump admin claims it has the authority to indefinitely detain without charge or trial an American citizen it accuses of being an ISIS member. It doesn’t. explains our court filing last night—and why the govt’s extreme arguments are wrong

“In Sarajevo we had the market massacre that woke up the conscience,” he said. But as larger death tolls in Syria receive less attention — airstrikes on marketplaces happen with regularity — he said he wondered what level of violence it would take to shock the world into action.

This a a wonderful article about a dedicated, principled young lawyer. It is also about the dysfunction and the sham that is the military commissions.

Reminds me of the bias-based junk science that was the basis of NYPD "radicalization in the west" report, which NYPD repudiated in response to lawsuit challenging its unconstitutional surveillance of Muslims. Maybe heed that warning & don't do this

Meanwhile, in response to suit to force transparency about Trump's new rules for killing people abroad, his administration won't even confirm the rules exist. They want to keep us in the dark about policy that literally governs life or death.
