Cambridge Analytica is shutting down, Facebook is just fine. This is the world we live in, the big guys always win. I wish someone would have the courage to shut down Facebook. MZ is smiling in our faces, again and again and again.

FB is too big to fail, just like the oil companies. However, it's big enough to die slowly...just like the oil companies. As long as there are people like us creating alternatives, everything will turn out okay in the end.

CA operates a bunch of companies, someone already surfaced a list of new corporations with the same address / employees.

> Cambridge Analytica is shutting down
Supposedly it just changed names (created a new company that does the exact same thing).

Jelly beans and plain yogurt. A new guilty-pleasure?
-
Why not just plain jelly?

Recently decided that unsubscribing all unnecessary e-mail, even from products I kind of like, was a good idea. E-mail became useful again. You really don't realize how much of it you get until you start to pay more attention to it.
-
I'm using a Gmail filter that searches and labels mails that contain the word "unsubscribe". It skips the inbox then I check it later to see if I received something worthy.

There's a thread on HN about how everone talks about how assembling a PC is so difficult, but I've never had a problem. Whether it's making sure I buy compatible components or putting them together. Maybe I have "The Knack" for PC building?
-
Do you use thermal paste for the CPU? I find that to be the most anxious thing in PC building. What if I melt the most expensive part?!
-
Standards in PC components have gone a long way to making successful builds more successful. My biggest problem is I keep old hardware around a long time and the memory standards keep changing. It is getting harder to upgrade the old stuff for old time's sake.

Iβm working on a new portfolio website, hoping to combine some microblog, html experiments, etc in one place. What are some of the best portfolio sites youβve seen?
-
I always try and keep an eye on DesignerNews, you get some good portfolios posted there regularly. Iβd advise against having a blog unless youβre committed to posting regularly on it. Too often thereβs portfolios with absolutely dead blogs which donβt come off well imo.

do i really like computers?

I do.

Hey @lucian, curious if you know anything about Vector Watch in Bucharest that was acquired by Fitbit? Iβve seen sometimes that local-language articles / interviews disclose more info about acquisitions than american press. Trying to figure out if they were bought to get a foundation of affordable devs in Romania or if theyβre continuing with the Vector product.
-
Vector Watch was cancelled from the start. The Vector hardware team was integrated with the Fitbit hardware team. Fitbit offices in Bucharest are hiring people on the cloud software and iOS/Android apps as you can see on LinkedIn. But you're right, Romanians are the most competent and affordable developers any corporation can find.

I like having a mouse (Logitech MX Master 2S) where I can press a button and quickly switch between devices. Right now I have it set up on my desktop, laptop, and phone (don't need it on my phone, but why not?). Android with a mouse is interesting. I feel like there's some kind of untapped potential there. Like maybe an idiot-proof or minimalist internet device for people.
-
Chrome OS fits that category. You can run web apps, Android apps and soon Linux apps. It started on desktops, then on laptops and now it works on tablets too. I think smartphones running Chrome OS might be a thing in the near future.

Peepeth (peepeth.com/_) is so idealistic that you can't edit or delete anything from it. Developers are building all kinds of things in the name of freedom, but users aren't actually free.
-
I found scrolling on that site jarring. I kept seeing the same posts over and over again, started to give me a headache.

Another book recommendation: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (free at hpmor.com). I think I originally came across it being recommended on reddit. It's Extremely Good.
-
I second that recommendation.
