Change in management at SPARC Europe

With effect from 1st August, Vanessa Proudman, has been appointed Interim Director of SPARC Europe until a full-time Director has been found.

Lars Bjørnshauge has decided to prioritise on DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) as Managing Director after serving as SPARC Europe’s Director since 2012.

“It has been a privilege working for SPARC Europe in years where OA has made significant progress, and is now emerging into an important part of the implementation of Open Scholarship.
I hope I have made my modest contribution to these exciting developments.
I have been very happy working with Vanessa, and I am confident that she will do a tremendous job as Interim Director.” Lars Bjørnshauge

Who is doing what in Open Science in Europe?

We want to find out where the overlaps are to see what room there is for more collaboration and identify any gaps where more work might be needed.

SPARC Europe wins LIBER Innovation Award

SPARC Europe has won a Liber Innovation Award (Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche – Association of European Research Libraries).

Vanessa Proudman received the award for the paper:
Open Access depends on us Professors! Europe’s Open Access Champions.
This paper was presented on 30 June 2016 in Helsinki, Finland.

It has been considered one of the 3 most innovative and relevant papers submitted to the 2016 LIBER Annual Conference.

Calling next generation Open Advocates: OpenCon 2016 in Washington DC

26682913153_780d8c7f12_mOpenCon seeks to bring together students and early career academic professionals from around the world who want to advance Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data. It takes place in Washington DC this year.

It’s a conference and platform for the next generation to learn about Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data, develop critical skills, and catalyze action toward a more open system for sharing the world’s information—from scholarly and scientific research, to educational materials, to digital research data.  If you don’t yet know OpenCon, see the highlights of OpenCon 2015 here.

Attendance at OpenCon is by application only. If you’re interested, and also perhaps in one of the three dozen sponsored scholarships, apply here by 11 July 2016.

OpenCon is organized by SPARC, the Right to Research Coalition, and an Organizing Committee of students and early career researchers from around the world.
