Modern planes don't have magnetic compasses, except for maybe a backup whiskey compass on the dashboard. Any cargo would be way to far away from that.

Good example, but everyone always gets this wrong.

If I remember Econ correctly, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” refers to opportunity cost. By laying in the vineyard, you were not earning money doing something else, like working. So you missed an opportunity to collect wages.
