#UBI #BasicIncome #Capitalism #StateSlavery: "No existing economy can pay for a generous basic income without defunding everything else. We would either have to settle for the minimalist version — whose effects would be highly suspect — or we’d have to eliminate all other social expenditures, in effect creating Milton Friedman’s paradise. Faced with these facts, we should question UBI’s rationality; as Luke Martinelli put it: “an affordable UBI is inadequate, and an adequate UBI is unaffordable.”
Until we profoundly transform our economies, we can’t implement a measure that would cost more than 35 percent of GDP in economies where the state already spends around 50 percent of GDP. The power relations needed to establish this level of UBI would constitute an exit from capitalism, pure and simple, rendering depictions of UBI as a “means” of social transformation nonsense. Indeed, many defenses of basic income can be classified as what Raymond Geuss called “nonrealist political philosophy”: ideas formulated in complete abstraction from the existing world and real people, completely “disjoined from real politics” — like to the Rawlsian model of justice that serves as an important inspiration to figures like Philippe Van Parijs.
If UBI does take shape, current power relations will favor those who have economic power and want to profit by weakening the existing system of social protection and labor market regulations. Who will decide the monthly amount and who will dictate its terms and condition? Who do today’s power relations favor? Certainly not the worker."

Scientists Unveil the First Portable Bionic Hand With a Sense of Touch
"A woman who lost her arm over 20 years ago has received the first portable bionic hand, which through a series of tiny electrodes and sophisticated sensors, has restored her sense of touch.
The technology unites the portable bionic hand with a computer that translates the information coming from the artificial fingers into a language the brain can understand, which it then sends back to the body through the electrodes..."

#UBI #BasicIncome: "So, this is where we’re at. I make many specific arguments in my essay.
The claim that left supports of UBI do not exist is not one, nor is the argment that we should oppose UBI merely because some neolibs are into it.
What I do argue is that economics suggests that gains from UBI would be lost to rising prices, citing Minsky, and that as a result of the well known neoliberal support that it does have, it would serve as political cover for cuts and privatization.
Citing Kalecki, I ague that as the struggle between labour and capital has not gone away, business leaders and business friendly politicians would continuously push to reduce UBI, eliminate it after all other social benefits have been cut and privatized, or simply allow it to fall behind inflation.
The issue is not that left supporters do not exist, the issue that that left support for UBI is based on bad reasoning.
Oh, and Graeber didn’t just call me an asshole once, but again."

#UBI #BasicIncome: "There will soon come a time, a bright, new future that doubles as a second dark age, when a majority of the world economy’s jobs will be either fully automated or altogether eliminated. Neither high-skilled nor low-skilled work will be spared from obliteration: Touch-screen stations will completely replace retail cashiers, as multilimbed robotic hydras perform brain surgeries. As the machines occupy an ever greater slice of the economy, the capital that they generate will flow into fewer and fewer pockets; namely, into those of the tech moguls currently advocating for a universal basic income. For them, exploratory UBI programs aren’t practice runs for a protosocialism that could counteract the woes of late capitalism. Rather, they are beta tests for deceptive public policy that could sustain late capitalism forever.
The aim is pacification, not liberation. A universal basic income is, in the most cynical sense, a subtle kind of doomsday prep for the tech billionaire, a means to diffuse the revolutionary potential of the working class by supplying them with the absolute bare minimum, just enough to keep them almost happy, fat in the apps. An Alexa or a Home. Three Blue Apron meals a day. A Casper mattress in a tiny house. Why work when you have this basic heaven to gain?"

#UBi #BasicIncome: "For the past few years, the Institute for the Future has been researching new patterns of work in the on-demand economy. We believe that the combination of a proliferation of on-demand platforms and advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence will render many traditional 9-to-5 jobs in formal organizations obsolete. Economic returns will increasingly go to the investors and owners of such platforms rather than those who are making their livelihoods fulfilling them. In other words, any new assets generated will be redistributed to the original asset holders rather than to workers.
Because of this, we believe that in order to achieve greater economic equity, our policies should focus on giving people more access to various types of assets. We call this solution Universal Basic Assets.
UBA identifies a fundamental set of resources (pdf) every person needs access to—such as financial security, housing, health care, and education—in order to achieve economic security and prosperity. We focus on three broad classes of assets: private assets, like money, land, and housing; public assets, in the form of infrastructure and services such as education, health, and public utilities; and open assets, which are a growing category of mostly digital assets that are communally created and open to everyone, like Wikipedia and other open-source resources.
Access to public resources—public education, healthcare, nature, and transportation infrastructure—are important assets that serve as a great economic equalizer. This is why Nordic countries consistently come out on top of global rankings of social mobility. Just think: In Denmark, the chances of reaching the top fifth of income levels (pdf) during your lifetime are virtually the same for children born to poor families compared to those born into wealthy ones. The chance for the same children living in Charlotte, Columbus, or Atlanta is 5%, and for those from Memphis only 2.8%. This is largely because of the differences in access to public assets.
In order to solve this problem, we can design policies and funding mechanisms that encourage capital flows to more distributive initiatives, such as cooperatives and employee-stock-owned companies. We can also give people ownership of their data so it can be used as an asset which they—not platforms such as Google and Facebook— can leverage and capture economic value.
But the point of UBA is not to collectivize or seize and distribute resources: It’s to ensure that people are given opportunities to thrive in a rapidly shifting economy. It can serve as a guide for designing actions and policies aimed at widening access to such resources."
