Developments in the #RobertMueller probe - which hit a milestone Wednesday with the sentencing of former #Trump fixer #MichaelCohen - have congressional Democrats openly revisiting the possibility of impeachment or even future prosecution of the president. On the former, top Democrats in recent days have gone so far as to say the campaign finance violations Cohen claims President Trump directed amount to an 'impeachable offense.' Some lawmakers swiftly raised the issue of the president’s culpability after Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison.

Top #Democrats are now citing all three of these areas - suspicion of #Russia collusion, obstruction of justice and campaign finance violations - as subjects to explore in the new year. The political and logistical challenge for Democrats considering impeachment will remain even after the party takes control of the House in January: Republicans control the Senate, and it takes a two-thirds majority in that chamber to convict an impeached president.

Special counsel #RobertMueller said Friday (Dec 7) that former #Trump campaign chairman #PaulManafort lied about five major issues after agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors, including his 'contact with administration officials.' In a heavily redacted document, #Mueller also said Manafort lied about his interactions with Konstantin Kilimnik. Mueller has said Kilimnik has ties to the Russian military intelligence unit accused of hacking the Democrats, and they've previously outlined how the two men may have worked together to tamper with witnesses following Manafort's arrest last year.

The failure of Manafort's cooperation could lead to more criminal charges, prosecutors have said. It also sets into motion a schedule that will lead up to his sentencing. Manafort is now set to be the sixth Mueller defendant to face sentencing. Both former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen and former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the federal government and will be sentenced separately in the next 2 weeks. Three other less-high-profile defendants earned between 2 weeks and 6 months in prison.

And recent news developments suggest that the probe is coming even closer to the president. Already, a leaked draft charging document conspicuously alluded that #RogerStone was in touch with Trump when Stone urged associates to try to get hacked material from WikiLeaks. Then a new charge against #MichaelCohen last week mentioned Trump himself, as well as his business and members of his family.
