The Evolution of Architectural Drawings.
A lot has changed in the last 10 years. Architects now have the opportunity to draw entirely in 3 dimensions and to do so, relatively easy. The jump from 2D to 3D does have a steep learning curve, which had me moving back and forth for a while.

However, we are now completely 3D. About a year ago, I decided to make the full-time jump to Revit which is a Building Information Modeling program - known as BIM in the architecture and building industry.

The big advantage? Obviously, it's visual. With a 3-dimensional drawing, you just instantly, get it. Architects, contractors, and clients alike don't have to look at a 2-dimensional drawing and try to visualize it in 3D.

The other main advantage is you are actually constructing the building on the computer. Everything on the computer screen is 3D which allows the architect to see how everything comes together. In 2-dimensional drawings, there can be a lot of unknowns. As architects, we anticipate these areas and work out them out in detail and section drawings. However, when you are working in 3D, these areas are readily apparent and much easier to see and detail. It's like a carpenter on a job site, when he's joining two pieces of wood, if something is not lining up or looks a little awkward, he sees it immediately.

By seeing these areas in advance, the project is inherently better all around. From a design perspective, we can design better and from a construction perspective, a lot of little details that would come up in the field are now resolved in the office before a saw ever touches a piece of wood. This results in projects that stay within budget and move along much, much more smoothly because there are far fewer surprises along the way.
