On August 16, the #NASASocial at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in #NOLA, gathered social media-savvy photographers together to snap photos of the complex where components for the Space Launch System are being built. In this blog, Flickr employee Wilson Lam shares his unforgettable experience at the event through a collection of photos from his trip! https://bit.ly/2Mp7Dfz

The Light of a New Day

What a thrill this morning to see the launch of NASA's ICESat-2 satellite, on the last Delta II rocket, from Vandenberg! We've had a marvelous three days here, meeting with mission scientists and touring Vandenberg's facilities -- huge thanks to the #NASASocial and #ICESat2 teams.

I was farther from the launch than I'd hoped; next time I'll know that I might be able to preposition sound-triggered cameras closer to the launch than spectators are allowed. We also saw just a couple of seconds of flight, before the rocket suddenly disappeared into the dense fog layer, even as the first roar of sound was washing over us. Maybe I'll just have to come back for more :-)

ICESat-2 is an observation satellite that will use a powerful laser to map the height of Earth's surface, especially land and sea ice in the polar regions. The ATLAS laser will fire 10,000 times each second, collecting a terabyte of data a day (all of which will be made publicly available).

An Old Friend

I'm delighted to announce that +NASA has invited me to the launch of the ICESat-2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base this weekend! This isn't the most beautiful photo, but a couple of years ago I had a chance to make an abbreviated visit to Goddard Space Flight Center where the satellite was undergoing testing -- I couldn't view it directly, because its powerful ATLAS laser was in use for the tests, so we could only see it on the monitor (it's the thing in the center-right of the monitor that looks a bit like a clothes washer). This Saturday, hopefully, it will be launched into orbit on a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket, on a mission to measure the changing height of Earth's ice on both land and sea. #NASASocial #ICESat2
